Buc McMaster
Off to the studio on Tuesday for a couple hours of tracking. Hoping to get live vocal & guitar down for Chamberlain's Gambit and Stones of Circumstance, leaving an instrumental interlude to plug in solo instruments at another session. I'm thinking fiddle for the former and a mandolin on the latter.........sound about right? Perhaps an upright bass on one, maybe both. The engineer and I will brainstorm on this after we get the basic tracks........he may have a better idea after listening. It's really against my better judgement to do this and I hesitated to return the studio call when this time came open. The questions I cannot answer: what is this for? what will I do with it? I dunno. Maybe it's just for the fun of it, for the self-satisfaction that I can do it..........assuming that I can!
bayoubengal1954
It's really against my better judgement to do this and I hesitated to return the studio call when this time came open. The questions I cannot answer: what is this for? what will I do with it? I dunno. Of course it's for the same reason as always since time began (especially for male acoustic musicians). The money! The fame! The women! Now get after it, Son!

E-minor7
Being in the studio laying it down is a challenge on so many levels : Your skills Your (artistic) judgment Your now intensified senses - how far and how micro can they go. Your general self - socially, creatively, under (gentle) criticism, under pressure, , , and praise. Eeeeehh your patience, , , humour and perhaps self-irony. . . Apart from that you can see it as a sonic photograph - just much more intense than normal photos, simply because all your focus and the list above is invested in the recording. And for splendid, good and bad or worse that concentrated energy will shine from that tape forever, , , for your children, relatives - even as small statements of general cultural value. Apart from that it's fun, , , like playing as kids - and in your case, Mcmaster, also holds the possibility to get the tunes published. Or at least nurture that dream. So there you go - knowing the autumn/winter of cause is ideal for such cave-activity. Be Happy ~ Feel Free , , , and take some real pictures there too

MissouriPicker
Good for you, Buc. Have a blast with it. .........There might be one big reason for doing it, or it might be "all of the above." Plus, you know you're dying to hear "the bird" recorded a professional setting. I think the fiddle, in particular, is a good choice to have on your music. Great addition to the kind of music you like doing. The mando will work well too. ........ I admire your acoustic sound a great deal in your own recordings. I'm very interested to hear you and the guitar in a studio. [thumbup]

BluesKing777
Good move, Buc! Why do it? Apart from the women and fortune and fame mentioned above (do they have all that in a studio?), it is probably because you want to hear the result of a professional recording of your playing and singing. And another big experience! BluesKing777.
Avery
Yes, those songs deserve studio treatment. I still listen to your youtube "Chamberlain's Gambit" song. Great songs you've written...
Buc McMaster
Well thanks, Avery.......very much. Above all else, a good lyric is what I'm after. Thanks for the encouragement, team! I'm sure it will be time well spent, regardless of what comes of it......or not. Women, fame and fortune? One outta three ain't that bad!

Fullmental Alpinist
The questions I cannot answer: what is this for? what will I do with it? I dunno. Because you can. Because you should. And besides, if you couple the results with a Holiday video, you might knock Red333 off his throne for Best Video Christmas Card. Go for it, Buc! AnneS
Glad to hear it, Buc...I'm headed back in a couple of weeks myself. Decided to add four more to the six I did last spring; then I'll get them mastered and call it a day. Giddy about it, actually. Why? Well...why not? It's a way to respect your songwriting chops and performance talents. Don't need no other reason, and if the effort turns out to serve other, perhaps unforeseen, purposes? Then, that's to ponder another day. Go have some fun!
dhanners623
You do it because we are driven to make music and share it. It's as simple as that. If the stuff I've seen you do here is any indication, you'll make a great record.
EuroAussie
Because it might inspire other to follow suit .... and coz Im sure its fun. (especially if you know your career and livelyhood doesnt rely on the success of the output)
Murph
you can see as it a sonic photograph - Bingo. That is the reason. We writers write, to be read / heard. The reason I started putting my originals on YouTube was because I googled an old friend and found he had died. There were just a VERY few videos scattered around the internet of him. At the time there were NONE of me. 50+ copyrights sitting in a drawer not being heard. I wish you the very best, Buc. You are a talent that deserves to be heard and THAT is the WHY. kidblast
Buc, do it when the chance is there. It's something you may not listen to much after you've recorded it right away, but there will come a time that you will appreciate having done it. I've got stuff going way back to the late 70s and early 80s. The guys I have hanging with for the last 15/20 have got about 20~25 songs recorded going back to the mid 90s. it's always a hoot to drag some of them in to a play list and listen to them. the real upshot is I wouldn't otherwise be aware of how my style, approach and techniques, changed, improved, evolved over the years.
