Tim Plains Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Long & McQuade is slowly getting prices and inventory on their website, which is a good thing. I bought my American Standard Strat in October for $950. At the time, a normal American Standard Strat cost $999 and the ash body ones listed for $1,099. Today, my Strat lists for $1,550...holy crap!! I've also been on the hunt for a Tele lately. Up until last week, a new '52 Vintage Reissue Tele listed for $1,700 and a '52 Hot Rod Tele listed for $1,875. Today the the VR lists for $1,999 and the Hot Rod lists for $2,350. WTF??
twelvenotes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 It's the drop in the C$ vs. U$. I bought my LP Classic Antique just before prices went up 22%!!! Stores are quick to adjust on the downside, but if the C$ recovers (which is unlikely in the near term) prices won't drop in a hurry. A hint: it won't work at L&M, but if another store has had the item in stock for a while you can get them to drop the price quite a bit. BTW Steve's on Queen Street has both those Tele's the lst time I was there.
Tim Plains Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Actually, I find it's the opposite. A few weeks ago, I had a '52VR for a few days from L&M when the price was $1,700 and they said they'd let me negotiate a price based on the previous sticker price (1,400). L&M also has ads all over their store saying they will honor old prices on old stock. LA Music in Mississauga gave me new prices on their old stock...go figure! Steve's is a bit too far for me. Maybe I'll give them a shout (thanks!) but I'm now leaning more towards a used Tele because I can't justify spending $1,500 on one. $5,000 on a Lester...no prob! $1,500 on a Tele...a bit much.
deepblue Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Steve's is a bit too far for me Steves is a dive. I always found it over crowded and there was always a slight stench of urine in the air. Maybe because its on Queen street...dunno. Check for dings if youre buying....alot of knocks in that store.
GuitarJunkie Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 When I was at Lauzon (local Gibson dealer) the other day, they had the old prices on the old guitars and were only putting the higher prices on new inventory as it came in. For example, their in-stock R8s were still $3059 canadian (about $2500 US) but I think he said the new ones were going to be around $3799 (around $3150 US). Still waaaayyy cheaper than MF.
twelvenotes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I don't mean to hijack this thread, which is exactly what someone says before they hijack a thread, but if you want to check out a really cool store, Cosmo Music in Vaughn is awesome. Apparently, its the first or second largest music store in North America. Two floors of guitars. The steps up look like a fret board. A couple of rooms with high priced guitars. Nicely organized and clean. I think some larger retailers should take notice. AreNine, that's interesting that L&M will negotiate. I've never had any luck getting them to move on anything. I wonder if its because they'll be doing inventory this month. Agree that Steve's is a dump and I'd never step into LA Music again after having dealt with the owners son. As for $1,500 on a Tele being too much and $5,000 on a Les Paul okay...couldn't agree more!!!
SRV-Zeppelin Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 That's why I like "mom and pop" stores. I've already got my next guitar picked out - a 62 Strat RI in Ocean Turquoise. There's a 2006 model at a local store that I've played quite a bit and really like, but since they got it before Fender's prices went up, I can get it for about $250 cheaper than if I ordered one or bought from L & M. (It also helps that I know the entire staff on a personal level...)
jefleppard Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 on the acoustic side, a j45 that used to be $2075 at L&M is now $2550. yeesh. its all about the dollar.

HeadCase Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Fender raised prices effective Feb. 1st. Some dealers raised prices right away on old stock, some on new stock only. Not exclusive to Canada.

Agree that Steve's is a dump and I'd never step into LA Music again after having dealt with the owners son.[/quote'] I know exactly what you mean...I couldn't get any decent prices from L&M up until last year. It was always just price match, price match, price match. Now I'm getting 10% - 20% off, depending on the item. Mike from LA Music? Do tell... He treated me well when I first started going there about a year ago but I won't go back, either. You've painted such a pretty picture of Cosmo Music that I must check them out. Fender raised prices effective Feb. 1st. Good to know...thanks!
rocketman Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Check out my thread on the Fender price increase here. MSRP is up about 20% but retail is up a whopping 30%!! Here is my last post in that thread. Well the retail prices look like they are going to be a LOT more than I thought. My American Deluxe Stratocaster is now going for a whopping $1,760. You can still find it for $1,350 other places, but this constitutes a 30% increase in price when others follow. Heck, for $450 more you can get a Les Paul Traditional. A Sienna Sunburst Standard Stratocaster is now going for $1,420, whereas last month it was going for $1,100, which again is a 30% increase.
RudyH Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Wait 'til you see the new Gibson street prices! If you want a Gibson you better get it now, if the prices haven't already gone up.
twelvenotes Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 I find this all very confusing. The WORLD is experiencing a once in three generation economic downturn and Gibson/Fender are increasing prices. Do they think they're in an economically insensitive business? I don't get it. I do understand Canadian price increases as a result of our currency no longer being at par, but outright increases? And don't give me that bull about input prices going up because oil and every other commodity has cratered and in this environment there isn't any cost push from labour. Sorry for the rant! I'm done now.
deepblue Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Maybe Gibson/Fender employees just got a pay raise?....so theyve raised prices to cover their bottom line.
grampa Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Don't try to figure what's going on with Canadians. Don't trust them. They just hang around the US border, waiting for something to happen down here so they can all come down here and take our stuff.

grampa Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I've heard it said that Canadians are just like Americans only nice. I hope you'll invade us nicely once everything here falls apart.
