It is very rare that a cover improves upon the original.

I can recall, waaaay back in middle school, having an "argument" with a friend over who's versions were better—The Beatles' original "Come Together" or Aerosmith's cover, as well as The Beatles' original "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" or Elton John's cover. I was flabbergasted, even back then, how anyone could think that The Beatles could be improved upon. Ridiculous.

But there are examples of when a cover not only improves upon, but destroys the original:

"Stop Your Sobbing" by The Kinks was pretty much owned by The Pretenders in 1979.

And for the record (no pun intended), Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" can not be blown away by any stretch. My wife told me to check out that new version a month ago or so, and I was not impressed. I couldn't sit through the entire thing, actually.

Blasphemy!

Haha! Yeah, I know a lot of people can't stand 'The Spaghetti Incident' or in fact GNR!...but as a kid in the 90's I used to listen to this all the time and loved it (still do!). You know Duff & Slash played on one of Iggy's records in the early 90's? I forget which one...

But what about this jam?

That's a classic. I love The Band, but I remember when I first got the Last Waltz DVD years ago it took me a while to appreciate it for some reason. I think I'd hoped it would feature more of The Band by themselves and not so many special guests. Never understood why Neil Diamond was on there [confused]

This was a great cover of The Weight (I still prefer The Band's original version though)

Honestly, that Disturbed cover is pretty bad in my opinion. They didn't change enough of the song for me to care to listen to it. Id rather listen to the Simon and Garfunkel version. I would have preferred they do it in their nu-metal style.

I like this version of Eleanor Rigby. It's not the greatest cover but i like it.

Thank you...I thought I was the only one that was not all that excited about the Disturbed version.

Nothing wrong with Gn'R. You just cannot top the Stooges. Iggy was one part of it, but there was also Scott Asheton on the drums.

You do make a valid point, but what about this one? Always thought RHCP did an awesome cover of Search & Destroy (even though Anthony's voice can get annoying after a while)...

There has been the funny occurrence that the release of a cover version predates that of the original. Other than the late Laura Branigan, the Italian singer and songwriter Raf didn't have a record contract then and wasn't able to release his song Self Control. When Laura Branigan's cover became a smash hit, Raf was signed, too. In Germany, Laura Branigan topped the charts for several weeks, followed by Raf's original.

I prefer Laura Branigan's version by far:

George Benson's version of Leon Russel's "This Masquerade"

When Leon performed this in concert, after George covered it, before singing it he would say, "With apologies to Mr. Benson".

Someone mentioned, Vanilla Fudge - "Season Of The Witch" was better by Fudge than Donovan IMHO

Bobby "Blue" Bland's version of "Stormy Monday Blues" is IMO the definitive version, not to take anything away from T-Bone Walker's

This is about a song written and composed by Steve Kipner and Andy Goldmark, covered again by the sorely missed Laura Branigan. I think the lyrics of the verses are up-to-date more than ever. The video is worth watching every frame until the last.

Here's the original sung by the former keyboarder, singer and songwriter with the Michael Stanley Band, Kevin Raleigh:
