saturn
Frank Marino, Mahogany Rush They never had much commercial success or hit songs, but had a pretty good cult following in the 70's and early 80's. He recently played a little place called The Rams Head in Annapolis MD, but I unfortunatley didn't get to see him. If you like jam based music, in the style of Hendix, played on an SG you should definately check him out. He's a little "out there", but is one of the best guitarists ever, hands down. I just thought I would turn on some of the younger players here who might not know about him.
GuitarJunkie
Just to give the young 'uns an idea of how BIG his band "Mahogany Rush" was back in the day, check out their opening act from this 1979 poster...

rjay777
I love the myth about Marino's soul being possessed by Jimi's spirit after a near death drug overdose. Hey, ya never know. :) Anyway it's kind of a shame FM and Robin Trower got typecasted as Hendrix clones, but all the true fans know better. Marino was and STILL is amazing imo. SG Lou
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush were AWESOME in their day. Not bad for a guy who overcame a nasty herion addiction. I head some of his new stuff and he still got it ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLDVjtQFCGI&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4lYJO8mDEA&feature=related

Sorry Lou but Frank never overcame a nasty heroin addiction, he suffered from a bad acid trip (LSD for those who don't know). His 1st album Maxoom, and the title track was a "reproduction" of how he felt and the album was also dedicated to Jimi Hendrix. Anyone really interested should visit www.mahoganyrush.com unfortunately, due to the site being hacked and spammed, you will have to sign up to gain entry. As for awesome in their day, as far as us "Franksters" (Marino fans) are concerned that day is still going on, as each day continues the fan base grows, where messages like these open more eyes and particularly ears, to Franks music. rjay777 wrote:...........Anyway it's kind of a shame FM and Robin Trower got typecasted as Hendrix clones, but all the true fans know better. Yeah, I believe that CBS got the music press to start that one, in the hope that it would help them sell Frank's music, obviously they were out to make money, and as they didn't releived Frank of all his royalties in the process, Frank claims that he hasn't received anything for all those albums until this day. Guitarandfeather - Frank is still knocking them out slowly but surely, try his Real Live Double CD, this is as close as it gets to his last tours from 2005 onward. GuitarJunkie that was just one of the big name bands that they played with Queen was another, if you go to see Frank now though he just plays a straight set, no guests, though I must add that he plays for about 3 - 3 1/2 hours if the mamangement allows it, and there is no break like some of the other big artists that I have seen. Saturn The reason they didn't have much commercial success was due to Frank not complying with the music industry 3 - 4 minute tracks for radio play, he doesn't believe that a track should end in that amount of time, just to promote a band for a record company to relieve them of royalties, plus a track should end when it's the end! In fact Frank couldn't give a damn about them anymore and is a lot happier with his new record label. Any one who truly believes that an artist is worth his money, should buy their original albums / CDs, if you hear Frank and support this statement please buy direct from his merchandise section at his website, you may be able to get them cheaper elsewhere, but a lot of the labels are just copying his CDs and selling them on. In fact I believe that in this day and age, any artist that you truly believe in will give you a better deal through their own website, if they think it's fair then so do I. Just remember that record companies will always try to get a bit more as they have their staff to pay! Fans in the U.K. were disappointed to learn, that Dale Langham who was doing the promoting for Frank over here, sold his half of the business to his partner and we are not sure if Frank will ever get to play here again. His last 5 gig tour was back in 2005 after a 22 year wait, and he was due to play again in 2006 but here the football took over and we were waiting for the next tour that should have been 2007. Well it's 2009 now and again we are still waiting, but because Dale packed it in, and I have received nothing from Simon, it may well be that Frank's "day" as far as the U.K. is concerned, has definitely ended. All I can add now is that if you live in the USA or Canada, and here that Frank is coming to town, go and see him. Anyone interested in his early or hard to get stuff, can contact me at mahoganyrushsteve@hotmail.co.uk Thanx for reading.
yoda
The first time I ever head of them was in "Wayne's World II". “I feel like I've been placed in the delete bin of life next to Mahogany Rush.” - Wayne Campbell. So I had to look into them and they are cool as sh!t.
