RIP Don Rickles

Big Bill

Yeah, I grew up watching all those guys on Johnny Carson. Back in the day when the guest just stayed and moved down the couch for the next guest. Dean Martin, Groucho, George Burns, Rickles all just cutting up and making Carson piss himself laughing.

Don was the only guy to talk to Sinatra like he was the bellhop.

I saw the Johnny Carson Show in he studio one time and he was the guest host and during the commercials he would tell the raunchiest jokes you could ever imagine. Tom Waits was on the show and he was so messed up he couldn't talk and they had to escort him off the stage, reset the clock and reshoot the intro and stuff to remove his promos from the broadcast.

Imagine the comments Don could have posted in your "Jim Marshal" thread. [flapper][biggrin]

A truly funny man. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times over the years when he performed at the Front Row Theater, which was locate in a suburb of Cleveland. He was a genuinely a nice man. He would invite every person in the audience that he made fun of backstage after the show to have a drink and talk with him. He was a class act.

Only stand-up comic I'm aware of that used to make tears come out of my dad's eyes; I remember being fascinated watching him heave with laughter, because he didn't react very strongly to most comedy... they were only a few months apart in age.

Generally speaking, people aren't tolerant of being insulted with comedic intent these days...
