Recommend me an Amp for a Standard..

Anything with at least a tube preamp, I have Marshall's first Valve amp (VS100RH), and a friend brought over his Standard (Norlin era) and I'll tell you what, it sounded pretty damn good out of that amp, Gibsons sound good out of just about anything. When I don't feel like going out to the garage, I use my daughter's little Drive 10 watt solid state cheapo thing, and my Classic sounds good even out of that, although those ridiculously hot pickups in it do tend to overdrive it a little too much... i really like the Epiphone Valve Junior Stack and here's why:

All tube power. will give you overdrive and can handle pedals well.

5w head can be plugged into any cabinet due to 3 speaker out jacks.

1 control and that's it. turn it up and let it rip. (it can be modded easily if you're into that)

not important, but it has a really cool vintage look to it.

the epi cab does have an Eminence 1x12 speaker.

the last time i checked, it the stack was only 250 bucks!!!

for the most part you can't go too wrong with a vox or fender tube amp (imo). also take a look at used amps. a used guitar store in my area had a fender twin reverb for 500 bucks. it was a little worn aesthetically but is sounded brand new plugged in. i wish i would have had 500 bucks then :)

Used is a good way to go, guy does work on my guitars has a JCM 800 combo, little 50 watt rig, and I'll tell ya, you could gig with this thing, it sounded great, I'm thinkin' of trading him my VS (Marshall) head for it, and run it with the 4x12 I got, I think that would sound bangin"!

I'm not sure what they go for in Oz, but if you want tubes the Fender Blues Junior street price is around $499 US. I should handle everything but metal. I've got a LPVM which has the Burstbucker Pros and it sounds great so your Standard should be good through it too. The little 5 watt Fender is the Champ 600, but IMO you'd be better with the 5 watt Epiphone or the Gibson GA-5. I'd agree on the Frontman overdrive, I don't like the overdrive on any of the Fender solid state amps, it just doesn't sound right to me. OTOH, the Fender cleans are hard to beat. Tubes are said to be better, because they naturally overdrive, and they sound louder at the same power levels.

Tubes are better why?

If you are just getting to know amps take some time to educate your ears on tone - try out every amp you can get your hands on so you can hear it for yourself. But in general, when compared with solid state amps or digital modelling amps (DMA)...

A good tube amp many argue, has better harmonic content, richer sound, smoother sound, not as harsh, better note bloom, greater fidelity through all frequencies, "thicker" sound (whatever that means!). All of this is even more true though, when you hit that "sweet spot" pushing those power tubes nicely...they just sound so damn good!!

When you shop around you'll realize quickly that there is a digital modeling revolution going on. You can probably buy a decent DMA or solid state amp pretty cheaply that will give you a lot of flexibility, built in effects, and pretty convincing tube-like amp sounds. Personally though, having tried and owned various DMAs/solid state amps I have yet to find any that will equal my Soldano HR 50+ (or other tube amp I've owned for that matter).

Your mileage may vary ;-)

I just got a Vox AD 50 VT 2-12 as you know it is a tube pre /modeler hybrid.I have an LP classic antique w/the 57's and this amp KILLS.I A/B Y it with my line 6 XL and WOW the combo of the L6 open back 2-12 and the more tube/warm closed back Vox is soooo fat.The best of both worlds.I know they have stopped making the 50 2-12 but I found one of the last ones at ZZounds .com.also check Jacksonmusic .com.Jackson's has an online live cam to see what you are getting very cool. You should be able to get the 2-12 there for around $400 and they are great to deal with.I tried many combos and put the Vox side by side to a jcm 800 and the Vox was hands down a better sounding amp w/more options, great tone at any price.Go get one...you wont be sorry.

If you want cleans and distortion then the Gibson GA-5 may not be for you, I recommended that one in the other post 'cause he said he was interested in overdrive and rock tones, the thing is if you want cleans also once a tube amp stars breaking up it will overdrive.

If you are looking at the Vox AD30VT then a good option but all tube (both preamp and power section )is the failry new Fender Super Champ XD, same price...

15W (tube watts are a lot louder and I mean a lot louder).

16 Amplifier sound models lots of styles.

16 Effects with level control.

Speaker Out and Line Out.

10" inch speaker (so you get some lows in there)

Oh and why does everyone say Tubes are the better type?

Someone once told me tubes create a more natural sound wave than solid state. Most high end audio equipment uses tubes as well. I've used both for years and I prefer tube tone. Modeling amps attempt to digitally re-create tube tone and some do it very well.

while i agree that tubes are better (just my opinion), it's this sorta thing that makes me laugh.

Why do tubes sound better than digital? This could be part of what we're hearing when we come up with these funny adjectives (warm, smooth, natural, organic, vs. brittle, cold, sterile, harsh). It is an unalterable matter of physics that no matter how fine the resolution of a digital representation gets, it is still a jagged edge rather than a smooth curve. It is not able to contain the same richness of information as the analog signal is with its smooth continuous curve. Look at the drawings of the sound waves.

The Australian dollar is kicking butt these days, isn't it?!!

Mesa Boogie makes kick-*** product. Tank-like construction and gorgeous tone. Used Nomad's, V-Twins and even the Subway Rocket may all fall into your price range.

Tubes - used Fender Deluxe Reverb

Solid State - Tech 21 TM 30 or TM 60 depending on how much volume you need. (30 watts or 60 watts)

I've got an old TM10 that I used for bedroom practice. Ability to go from Fender clean to Marshall grind to Mesa Crunch. I had a Vox AD15VT. It had all the built in effects. But didn't sound as good with my Les Paul as the TM10.

The TM30 and the Vox AD30 are priced similarly.
