NighthawkChris
NightHawk: Thanks for taking the time to post helpful instructions. ...perhaps top wrap the tailpiece, if you want... hope I don't get slammed...LOL. Pleasure to be of service! I just have been through the woes of new guitars and breaking them in. Hey, these things take time and patience, even when you have none (of either!). Top wrapping seems like a player-preference thing to me. Neither right or wrong - do you like to do this or not is the question (rhetorical). It's not the way Gibson does it, but it doesn't hurt as far as I can tell. I do it the "Gibson" way - always have always will, but this is what I do. I believe that there are many players who do the top wrap setup and have 0 issues with doing so. I believe the only reason for top wrapping is because of the TOM making contact with string "behind" the saddle or to generally reduce the break angle created with the string and saddle. My LP has like the ever so slightest gap between the high E and the TOM - again, I do not top wrap. I compensate by raising the tail a bit to give me a little more of a gap only IF I am making contact. I also prefer a little higher action, so what setup works for me may not work for someone else... I heard that raising the tail makes the strings more "slinkier" since there is less tension apparently due to a smaller break angle. Seems reasonable to me I guess. I can't really tell the difference personally, but I have never tried anything dramatic with this tailpiece being raised to its limits.
