backyardburial
Can any of you guys/girls tell me if there are any differences between specials made in the 80's vs those in the 90's. Im comparing a 87 model to a 95 model. Im just curious as Ive heard that sometimes there are good and bad years. Cheers
hbomb76
Well, keeping it simple, the '87 would mean it's got no pickguard, single volume, single tone, two humbuckers (unless it's a "Special 400" which would make it a H/S/S pickup configuration with mini-toggles). Not a terrible guitar but not as "classic" looking as the '95 model. I'd personally rather do the '95 if it's a Special, just because it's a little more versatile and better looking. hellion102792
I'd go with the '95. I'm sure the '87 one has some kind of mojo, but it just reminds me too much of that cheap Epi bolt-on SG they sell (it's modeled after the '80s Special). Plus, like Hbomb said (follow everything he says, he KNOWS his stuff), the more recent one holds more versatility.
