Things I love and hate on guitar web forums

Recommended Posts

Well, I can't really say what I love and hate about guitar forums in general, since this is the only one I participate in. I read some stuff on the gear page a bit but I have never posted there.

Things I love about this forum are the various personalities and characters who bring their humor and experience to the forum. I am well aware that Io have engaged in debate about stuff that has nothing to do with guitars, but that is not why I come here. I much prefer hearing about and seeing someones new gear. Or watching the forum help someone work through a problem and learning something from that.

I love the fact that novices like me are tolerated. I love the fact that this place is like a living encyclopedia of all things Gibson (and beyond).

I don't care for all the people who come here to complain about stuff they hate about Gibson, most of which is ridiculous.

Some of the recent threads where some people just want to spew out anger and insults at members for no good reason do have some weird element of humor to them but overall I could do without that. On the other hand, having people like that around just makes me seem that much better by comparison!

Anyway, three cheers to the Forum!

I love it when I have new pups. I called this one George.

I found after using this pup for a while. It's got a real meaty bite to it now. But it's nice and mellow in my hands. Treat it wrong and it'll bite you on the as*.

Thanks to Rabs, I will be scratching that itch.

That's what we like to hear [thumbup] Always a pleasure to help :) I look forward to seeing what you end up with.. That wine red one with the black binding is really nice.

And as for me...

This is the first forum I ever joined as when I bought my LP DC Special it was modded a bit and I wanted to make sure it was real.. Then I found out my LP Classic wasn't a full solid body and has weight relief which still shocks me as its so blinkin heavy..

Back then this place was more like how KSDaddy describes most forums... It was a tough place for a newbie. Arguments across the whole forum on several threads at once... But that changed not too long after I joined and started being moderated like it is now... And its a great place to be (thank you mods, you do a great job).

And hows this for a story.. When I first came on here, I sh*t you not, I didn't even know what intonation was all I knew was how to play (and that's still questionable).. After the first year of being on here I learned so much I started to build my own guitar.. Now, I have started a business building guitars for other people.. That's how much of an effect this forum has had on my life (even though im still only in the early stages of my business, still a way to go yet)...

I really don't think I would ever have got through my first guitar if not for the amazing support and kindness on this forum.. So I come back to talk to all you (mostly) nice people ( :P ) and share what I have learned and hopefully give back some of the knowledge and kindness that I have been shown on here.

1. I like to hear about different guitars people have played or are playing and what they like about them.

2. The age and maturity level (in general) is better than some places, with certain exceptions.

3. I love the pictures of the guitars, hearing the music people create, listening to people talking about their gigs or playing.

4. I love the technical advice and learning and sharing.

5. I've made a few friends here and on other sites and forums and I'm thankful for each and every one. And, when/if I get to your area, let's play!

As far as dislikes?

1. Trolls. They usually go away over time but it's usually not fast enough.

2. People who feel that their likes and dislikes are superior to others and berate them on their preference. I don't care if someone's playing a Gibson or Epiphone, Fender or Ibanez or whatever. There's some I prefer and some others prefer. Everyone is allowed to like their guitars and brands but not everyone will have the same preferences.

3. Wrong answers. Some people pretend to be an authority or have experience and obviously don't, once they start talking.

4. Favorite guitarists, musicians, bands. I like what I like but that doesn't mean my preferences are wrong or any better or worse than someone else's.

Thankyou very much.

The P94s in the ES175 sound terrific to me. They are a bit special.

It is a 2013 - that year every ES and some archtops were available in gloss black - the neck pickup is wound to 10k and bridge to 10.5k.

Obviously a loud 175 feeds back a bit [biggrin]....I want to take it to rehearsal sometime, really crank it up and walk around the room to find a sweet spot!

No it's a very good question. I think they are potted too.

Clean tone = no hum or noise on any setting up to loud gig level (60w amp on 4 or 5)where guitar begins to feed back.

Gain up on amp = hum on neck or bridge setting, mid setting cancels hum completely.

As to pickup's own tone, very similar to a P90; slightly thinner than hb but with plenty of colour and bite IMO.

So glad I went ahead and got this guitar!

thanks. I've been considering going with those pickups for my SG. just to have something a little different tonally. where I have so many other guitars with humbuclers. actually considering trying just a P94 at the neck and leaving the Pearlygate at the bridge. I love the P90 / P94 neck tone.

I'm sure this has been done before, but I feel the need to dust off the subject of what we like and dislike when it comes to being a guitar web forum member.

1. I love to share thoughts and war stories with people who share my passion for playing guitar, owning guitars, and compulsively collecting more guitars.

2. I love that most of you are old guys like myself. There's a comfort in knowing that the majority of you here on the Gibson boards are geezers like myself.

3. Similarly, I love that there are younger guys and girls on here too, and that we get the opportunity to pass-on advice and share life's experiences.

4. I love that I learn something new every day. It's usually a small tidbit of technical advice, or sometimes it will be a 'blinding flash of the obvious' spiritual or philosophical thing, but I love that we can acknowledge that we are all learning and growing as guitar players.

5. I love it that so many of you are willing to share your home recordings, warts and all. There's an honesty in that, and it's refreshing on the internet. (Compared to the posing, posturing, and over-the-top swagger found elsewhere, particularly on social media sites.)

and.......

* I hate the expression 'pups'.

I have been playing and performing live for many decades, and I have never once met a guitar player or bass player who called pickups 'pups', ever.

They are pickups. Just call them pickups.

* I hate it when people get into angry exchanges over brand snobbery.

Hey, we are all attracted to what we are attracted to.

THere's no use arguing over Epiphones versus Gibsons, or Squiers versus Fenders.

You never hear two men duking it out on the street, arguing over which is better, blonde women or brunette gals, do you?

Just love what you love, eat your cherished chocolate ice cream, and respect that other people prefer vanilla or rocky road ice cream.

* I hate when people leave objects attached to the headstock of their instrument.

Clip-on tuners, capos, whatever;

It just sort of distracts the eye, sullies the beauty of the guitar, and displays a casual disrespect to the original craftsman who originally made that guitar.

Tune the guitar, and then set the tuner aside.

Play that song with the capo at the 3rd fret, and then when the song is over, un-clip it and set the capo aside.

That's my aesthetic advice.

* Though I love it when everyone posts photos of their guitars, I hate it when they don't set the stage for a really nice photo.

Nobody wants to see your dirty laundry, un-vaccuumed shag carpet, or piles of old boxes and junk in the background.

We just want to see the beautiful, shiny, awesome guitar.

(Preferably without a clip-on tuner or capo on the headstock. Just sayin'......)

* I hate to read postings wherein a fellow finally purchases his dream guitar or long-sought-after-guitar model, and then begins to describe how he's going to immediately gut it and replace the pickups, the nut, the bridge, and kitchen sink, all in pursuit of some mythological perfect tone.

My advice?

Take the time to play and explore many, many guitars, and then (and only then) buy the one that sounds and feels perfect.

One that doesn't need modifying.

And then enjoy it and play the heck out of it, bone-stock.

Okay, I'm gonna shut up now.

[glare][crying]

Mostly I like the folks on here. Lots of great people and the knowledge that some have amazes me. I agree with most the likes that people have said. I love the discussions and read mostly on them, love the photos and wish I could post photos. I've tried many times on different sights, must be this lap top? Even my wife and son can't get it to work and she's a Masters on computers. She's talking about getting me a new one his year so maybe that will work. Mostly I hate this Cold I got!msp_thumbdn.gif

Have you tried uploading to an image hosting site like Imgur? I’d be happy to help you figure it out, it shouldn’t have anything to do with the make/model of your computer

I like the Virtuoso #3, Burrell and Django records on display. Very fine choice. I can't quite recognise the other one, but sure it is of equal good taste. I have the full manuscript of the Virtuoso 3 album. I'm not going to lie, it's challenging music to read!

(Oh and of course that 175 is a beauty too).

I tried Imgur, loaded a bunch of guitars there, it took everything fine, loaded one photo copied it and all and went to paste it on the forum and it didn't work. Then went back to imgur and it wouldn't let me back in with my password. I then tried the sight Pippy said to do and it worked even better. It was much easier but it wouldn't take on the forum post either. So my son is a natural with computers and he tried for a long time to get it to work and No Show. It just shows a bunch of numbers or letters in a horizontal line and no photos. Digger has been very kind in posting some in the past for me. I can send them to him and he posts them but I hate to bother him that way. But I've tried everything. Weird too as I used to be able to post photos here, worked fine till way back there was a hack or a scam and several people complained about things not working right for them and that's when I lost the ability to post photos. Must have been last year by some newby and I responded to him and that's when it screwed this computer up. So Deb wants to get me a new one and give this one to our 3 year old grandson. It's really an old lap top. The keyboard doesn't even work. Thanks anyway Dub-T for offering! Your very kind but Deb wants to go to Neb. Furniture Mart and get a new computer this week for me and then buy a new one for her too and I'll probably do all knew passwords setting it up.

Thankyou.

The other album is 'Frivolous Sal' by Sal Salvador.

"Virtuoso 3" is a wonderful LP - Pass plays his own compositions on it, for those who don't know.

I was very fortunate to see Joe Pass live.

I'll redo the pic better sometime....

I use Imgur and I have no problems with it. I used it to post this image of my Gibson. When you post an image from Imgur be sure that you are using the, "BBcode" which is for sharing images on forums. I hope this helps.

Also in Imgur you have to pick a size to code. I find the large thumbnail to work well here. I think I have a pic of this in Imgur... lemme look.

Love these old LP sleeves. I better dig some out also.

I haven't heard 'Virtuoso 3'. Though at the time of 'Virtuoso' (mid 70's) I saw Joe at Ronnie Scotts. Wonderful.

Easy now folks. Let him have his opinion. I am confident that once he has finished his "Snickers" bar he won't be quite as upset by other members' photos or comments.

The interwebs is a huge place full of people without faces. I personally enjoy reading comments from people I don't necessarily agree with. I roll my eyes a bit when

I see the 500th post about pickguards or weights or which brand of magnetic field receptor/signal converters (not pups) sound best but everyone's path is different and I know that

someone else wants that info even if I don't. You never know what you can learn

I think we need to take forums and Facebook groups with a grain of salt. These sites are there for everyone. The gifted and and the challenged. The rich collectors and

the poor virtuosos. Enjoy the ride and let others do the same. Take what makes sense to you and step over the rest. While the drama is entertaining we can choose not

to be involved in it.

Don't Worry, be happy!

That residency may have been one of the times I saw him - it was with Nils Henning (NHOP) on bass....?

It was wonderful, as you say...

He played unaccompanied that evening. Well, almost. Oscar Peterson showed up later and sat at the piano and joined in. Joe had his eyes closed and didnt know he was there until he heard the piano. He half glanced backwards and nodded.

Now, if I had just walked on and sat at the piano I'd have been kicked out. Oscar got away with it.
