Dating a Les Paul Classic - 5 digit serial number

Hi!

A friend of mine is willing to sell me his very pretty les paul classic which he believes to be from the 90s. I'm not so sure.

It has a 5 digit serial number which reads: 5 9669, and a "custom shop" stamp on the back of the headstock.

Does anyone have any idea what year this is from, if it's actually custom shop, and what the ballpark value is?

It sounds great! Has the zebra humbuckers, wine red finish.

Thanks!

Eric

1995 and yes, the Custom Shop made some 1960 Classics.

No idea about current value.

Serial number of 1960 Classics is as follows;

9 XXX = 1989. First year of production and, as there were fewer than 1000 made, the individual serial number was only 3-digits in length.

From 1990 - 1999 : First digit is last digit of year of manufacture and next four digits were individual instrument number. 5 9669 = 1995; instrument # 9669.

From 2000+ : First two digits last two numbers of year of manufacture; other four as before. 02 1234 = 2002; instrument #1234.

This is perfect! Thanks so much. Looks like they go for anywhere between $1000 - $2500USD on ebay. I'll see how generous my buddy is feeling. Fingers crossed!
