I went into my local music store today to get an SG Standard and they had an 67 SG with the P90 pickups and they are selling both for the same price.

What does everyone think is the better guitar ?

For me I love playing rock and blues, so I think both guitars are suited to my influences but now after seeing this guitar I dont know anymore what I want ! ahhhhhhhh

Guess which one I'm voting for...

Those '67s are tough to find. Standards are everywhere. I'd jump on that GOTW and if it turns out you don't like it (which I'd be really surprised) you could probably flip it pretty easily or even trade it for a Standard.

BTW, I just did a quick search on ebay and there are currently NONE for sale. I'm not surprised since they almost never show up on ebay. Even searching completed auctions, there was only one and it sold for $1324. That's more than they were new.

That's not why I'm saying to jump on it, though. It's an awesome guitar. I own "a few" Gibsons, and currently my main guitars are my '67 Special and my ES-339 (hey Murph). I have Les Paul Standards, a Junior, a Special, an Explorer, and a V that all stay home when I go to rehearsal. The SG is perfect for rock, blues, and is especially nice for clean stuff. It doesn't have that midrange "honk" that some humbucker guitars have when playing clean.

Think of it as a mix between a Strat and a punch in the face. :-s

Thanks, for the extra info. Im really surprised that they are selling it for the same price as a standard $2400 (aud). I would have thought considering that there are only 400 of them it would attract a premium.

Do you think they are better quality than the standard in terms of build ? I've read a few comments that Gibson has some quality control issues over there Les Pauls and SG models. Its very hard to know what to look for when you are a "relative" novice when it comes to buying guitars, espically since this is going to be my first Gibson.

Looking forward to getting my SG and posting a few photos up, it seems like there is a bit of an SG club here !

I noticed afterwards that you're down-under. That would make it even more rare. As far as quality, I have absolutely no issues with mine. The build quality and finish are perfect. I didn't even bother having it set up as it played perfectly right out of the box. I've also heard people complaining about quality issues the last few years, but personally I haven't had any problems yet and I've bought about a half dozen new Gibsons in the past year and a half. If the one in the store looks and feels good, I wouldn't worry.

BTW, here's a close up...

I don´t know what everyone thinks, but I think it´s the one YOU like better. Even though I´d agree with Lous1952 if I had to choose. If it´s a reissue against a standard it may be somewhat different.

I'd sell my house to get one of those '67 GOTW's. I say go for it, if for some reason you don't like it there will always be Standards on the market. This is a rare opportunity, so I'd take advantage of it if I were you =P~

Thanks for all the information guys, they are sending the guitar to my local music shop for me (its in another state) so i'll check it out later this week and if it looks ok (its been on display at the store) i'll be the proud owner of a new GOTW 67 SG.

And i'll also have to dodge punches !
