Getting back to the UK with a new guitar

Recommended Posts

As far as I know you are allowed to carry a guitar for personal use.... You can carry up to 11lbs of Rosewood before anyone should bother you.. However it will of course come down to the individual customs person who deals with you.... The only time you have to pay is when you are taking a guitar for commercial use or to buy or sell as in if you were selling the guitar and making money on it.

Some nice airline people may let you take it on board.. But most will probably make you put it in the hold. Its worth a call to the airline you are going to use to find out.. It may make a difference for instance if its in a soft case rather than a hard case as they are lighter and take up less room.. But obviously that adds risk..

Strictly speaking you have to go through "something to declare" and pay 20% of the purchase value in VAT (I don't believe there are any other duties on a guitar).

Cool, thanks. I have British relatives that come here 3-4 times a year. I like to surprise them with new words to use [biggrin]

:)
