Mr. Les Paul and mr. Slash Hudson

Slash is one of the reasons I play guitar.. I was raised in the 80s he was there for my generation (and anyone else I guess :) )

I don't get it when people moan about him saying hes not that great or whatever.. I think hes awesome... Not the most technical or original player, ok, but what he does I think he does better or at least as good as any other player (80s hard/heavy blues based rock)... Hes stayed in the business for a long time and as well as anything else surely the haters can at least respect that? (and helped Les Pauls become cool again in an era of pointy guitars).

For me he hits a really great middle ground of melodic and speed playing... I usually love what his solos have to say and I enjoy his own albums outside of GnR.. I just don't get what there is not too like?

Anyway.. :)

This is one of my favourite Slash appearances.. not so much for what he plays, but the look on Brian Mays face, you can really tell he enjoyed it :D

I think I know why some people think he's not "that great or whatever". They were one of the last giants of the record industry, and everyone hates a winner.

I can understand people who say he plays great theme-based solos, but that's that. Those are typically people who do not play guitar.

As for shredding, we've all heard the last solo in "Paradise City". He can shred.

What can I say... Agree with everything you said, Rabs. Wouldn't say he's why I play guitar, but he's certainly why I play Gibson guitars.

I've never seen that video of him playing with Les Paul - I enjoyed that.

I first got into music in 1991 because of Guns N' Roses and back then Slash was the best guitarist and probably the coolest guy on the planet in my opinion. I do enjoy his playing on his more recent albums, but prefer listening/ watching the older stuff. People say he's not that original, but Coma and Locomotive sound pretty unique and original to me. I always thought the Illusions pushed Slash's playing to another level. The first Snakepit album is still one of my favourites and also the best thing he did without Guns N' Roses I think.

Two of my personal favourite Slash tunes...

"Coma" is a perfect example, man. Even if you don't look at the actual guitar parts and just at the songwriting, it has elements of Queen and Sir Elton, but with a decidedly unique twist to it. To say the least.

In a hurry, but I've posted a clip of "Coma" live from the early 90s on here, so use the search function if you feel like watching what I feel is a version far superior to the album version.

But yeah, agreed. A naysayer could argue that there's some pentatonic blues in there and that's not original... But they'd be dead wrong. It's a small, small part of the leads. And if anything... Look at how it's used over some pretty strange chord progressions.

Unique player. And it's always fun to see Les jam with people. You can't help but smile, because he's always smiling!

Same here. Slash kept me sane in the 90's when all of my friends were listening to steps, backstreet boys, five and countless other bands not worthy of their fame during that decade

Slash isn't my favorite guitarist but he's one of them. Back in the 80's, before anyone had heard of Guns N Roses, we had. Our band learned the entire Appetite album and played 3 or 4 different songs from it every night we played. Learning his guitar parts was fun back in the day. I haven't listened to much past that album but I really enjoyed his playing and sound on it. There was a group of us who heard of GNR before they were on MTV and before Sweet Child O Mine. We saw them open for Alice Cooper in 1987, I think and they were awesome. We got their autographs after their show because they came out into the audience afterwards and we located them and got autographs. They were really nice to us and gladly signed autographs.
