Riffster
Man, can he play. I’m glad he addressed all the questions. I think PRS didn’t do a good job for presenting this guitar. I’m sure it is now clear to them that a lot of musicians see them as the company that copied Gibson and now Fender.

LarryUK
My opinion. Some sackings at Fender? Perhaps. He made this video to stop Fender doing a law suit? Yes. Off the line guitar? I doubt that. Someone would have known it was going to him and did the extra bit of work on it. Would I buy one?No.

I doubt that. Someone would have known it was going to him and did the extra bit of work on it. Would I buy one?No. Why sackings at fender? Id be interested why you think they're have concerns about a lawsuit and how does this video protect them? Many test cases show that you cannot protect the shape. Both fender and Gibson have tried and it has come back every time that the shapes of these bodies are natural conclusions anyone would have arrived at. The only aspect which can be considered a trademark is the headstock shape and the logo. I think they're concerned that when a person not only copies the wood choices, pickup design and control layout/wiring of another manufacturer but in this case simply lifts the entire design from another manufacturer there isn't really anything to convince the consumer not to just buy the original product from the company who have been doing it for 60 years and who have the heritage. I think the video was made to explain what's different from the strat to try to take a chunk of the market who would otherwise buy a fender. As it stands I think the only new market they're tapping is John Mayer fans, who play and who don't hold much regard for the heritage behind the model. That's a very small market increase for all that work. The public reaction seems to have cemented this for them. Not sure how they failed to predict that. The most interesting thing to come out of that video for me was that John clearly has a real understanding of visual design and geometric balance/imbalance. It seems likely he has a specific interest in photography.

Then he went on about it was him that wanted certain things. Taking the blame from PRS. I watched a Neal Schon video yesterday about the problems he had at Gibson getting what he wanted on his guitar. He wanted the shaved heel. Recessed Floyd etc. He said he gave up in the end and that became the Axcess / Lifeson. He went to PRS and they gave him all he wanted. He said he had quality issues too. It'd be good if someone like Bonamassa got Gibson by a group buyout.
merciful-evans
Its good that JM made it clear that his SS was a production model rather than a 'special' for him. As a Strat player of nearly 25 years, I have to admit that I never got used to that 7.25" neck radius. As a young man I thought I would have that guitar forever, but once I exchanged it, I never once looked back.
kidblast
it is a pretty impressive sounding guitar, they did "think" through some of the innate problems many of us have with the start. The pickups sound pretty good despite the phone audio missgivings. Also I think the tone control stuff he mentions... IMO, spot on.. Strats are definitely a bit harsh, on the bridge pup. The newer standard I have (2015) with the modified tone setup, wired the bridge pup to it, is an improvement. my 95 Strat Plus, which has texas specials in it, will seriously rip a hole in your forehead if you're not wary for the high end settings on your amp it doesn't change my pov, well maybe a little,, still don't see myself purchasing one.. Karloff
I could only stomach about 30 seconds of his face and I had to stop. LOLOL ! Rabs
Well I kind of agree, there is something rather annoying about him (like Bieber)... But I gotta give him props for answering all the questions and standing behind what he has done rather than letting PRS take all the flak.

Don't know the dude personally, but as a player, oh yes,.. and quite a fine one at that. Now, Kanye West,, that's a horse of a different color. There's a low life scum bag looser if there ever was one. ya'll wanna hate someone, just go there! LOL!
Riffster
I make fun of his douchiness but he's turned it down quote a bit. I saw him live despite not wanting to go, Sheryl Crow and him were touring together and my wife wanted to go see Cheryl, my wife also thinks is is a ****** or was back then but both of us acknowledge how well he can play. At his show people would stand up and get wildly excited about his pop songs then would sit down when he played the blues. Lucky bastard dated Katy Perry, now, if you gave me a choice of playing like him or dating Kety Perry, I'd continue to be a hack.
Riffster
And now people have started to point out how the headstock looks like a Schecter headstock.

Rabs
Yeah theres no hate.... I don't know the guy, but it doesn't stop me finding him a bit annoying.. Im not even sure exactly why... and it doesn't even matter really... but fining him slightly annoying does not in any way amount to hate. And no its nothing to do with his playing or who he dated.... Rabs
What Rabs said .. Well this is the thing.. If I hated everyone who plays guitar better than me, that would include just about every guitarist on the planet and wouldn't leave anyone for me to talk nerdy guitar stuff with.. MichaelT
After watching a few minutes of the video, I'm still not a fan of him or the guitar. I can't say that I want to punch him in the face but I have no desire to listen to him talk or play. His playing does nothing for me, he seems like he's stoned or something, and it was painful to watch him and listen to him talk and play. I don't really know who he is or how he's "famous" but what I've heard hasn't been all that great to me. It's quite possible that I'm just not hearing the right songs. Rabs
And the fact that for some reason he has about 9 different signature models from about 3 different companies Maybe one day he will get through enough companies to want a RabsWood :D

pippy
It would look like a Strat, with the Rabs headstock. Having exhausted other manufacturers Mayer's RabsWood would have a fairly unique shape vaguely modelled (if we are nit-picking) on a LP Double-Cut body shape. It would have a 'bucker at the bridge and a P-90 at the neck; be crafted with a hand-selected Jacaranda 'board mated to a Douglas Fir neck, attached (long neck-tenon) to a Tulip-wood body with a book-matched Burr-Walnut RabsWood Copyrighted Edge-Carved-Top-Cap. Lastly it would be finished in a beautiful stained-wood finish and would play perfectly. Mayer should be so lucky, Rabs! Pip.
