is the gibson explorer worth buying? im 14 nearly 15 been playing 3 years and i really want one but im not sure if i shuld.

is it worth getting?

 

have no fear youngone, go for it and don't look back. been playing for about, going on forty years and wish the guitars and basses i used were top of the line from the beginning. now that the hill has been overtaken the collections holds a few Gibsons, Explorer with carbon fiber pick guard ,Flyin V with 3 pickups, a LesPaul ...

 

if you have the bling go for it, if not wait until you can afford it. one thing for sure is get the hardshell case!!

go to a store and try a couple out, and while you're at it, you can try some V's

I love my V and actually prefer to play it sitting than standing. It sits up in a semi-classical position which is really nice.

 

I sit with it it's "legs" straddled over one of mine (I'm sure Freud would have plenty to say about that) and she sits up perfectly. My Reverse V is also much better as a sit down guitar.

 

I'm hankering for an Explorer which is comfortable sitting down and to my liking, is the best balanced guitar guitar to play standing up (particularly if have low slung guitars) although as has been said prior, you need to make sure you have plent of clear air around you if you're going to spin around too quickly...

Tell you what ... I grew up on Metallica in the early/mid 80's ... so I've ALWAYS loved the Explorer. James up on stage with his white baby.

 

FINALLY got the gumption to buy my own about 3 years ago and have not looked back. Couple questions for you though, or rather, things to consider:

 

1. How tall are ya? It's a big guitar. It's got some heft to it, too ... don't know the weight, but it's definitely the heaviest I own.

 

2. Do you have the gumption, sir? Just do it ... NOTHING like rockin' an Explorer.

 

It's a super easy guitar to play. Nice medium sized neck. Stays in tune like a champ. JUST DO IT!! Here's mine ...

PS ... I bought mine used for $750 WITH the case. Look for used if you're not 100% sure you're gonna dig it. That way, you can also pick it up and play it ... see if it's in good shape.

In my opinion Stargate SG-1 is one of the best sci-fi shows ever made. Not only does it have

 

a very original and compelling premise but it also has some of the best and most original characters of

 

any TV show. As well as this it manages to pull of not only convincing character development but also

 

manages to move the show itself forward at a steady and realistic pace.

I would say try it out, and if you like the way it plays buy it and never look back. The gibson explorer is a quality instrument, and I hope to get one in the future as well.

I really like mine. It does look a bit big on me. I'm 5'4". The OHSC is huge. You need a regular sized car to stow this plank. The guitar case would not travel well on a bus or in a small taxi. The case is 48.5 inches long. That's a tad over 4 feet.

 

You say you're 14. So I guess you don't have a car. That guitar case could use a truck.

I personally recommend buying an Epiphone and replacing the pickups with some nice Gibsons...You'll have a great guitar' date=' and save a lot of money. I've played my share of Gibsons and Epis, and while Gibsons are definitely nicer guitars, I don't think they're worth all the extra money. With respect, I disagree.

 

If the Epi is bought new and the Gibson p-ups are also bought new then you are already more than half-way to the price of a used Gibson.

 

I know Epi's are fine instruments (I've owned them myself) but they are not, as you say in your post, as good as Gibson.

Well, you may or may not have bought the thing. <grin>

 

But I go along pretty much with the idea of feel.

 

Any Gibson with humbuckers is going to be among the more versatile instruments you could get, but at that, some guys can make a Tele sound good playing jazz.

 

To me 70 percent is comfort and build quality, 10 percent looks and 20 percent output to an amp and/or various boxes and an amp. That latter can get oodles of different sounds.

 

My youthful weakness was in switching guitars I wish I had now for pieces that I thought met a "look" of the style I was playing. I think that was a major error. More than major, in fact.

 

Comfort playing.

 

Some 40 years ago I thought looks were really important for the style you were playing. Now? Naaah. I've done jazz with an SG and cowboy with a 175. If the music swings, any audience will figure you've got it right regardless.

 

Gibson vs. Epi comes down to whether you can afford the better box. Epi is a helluva bargain, Gibson should be very perceptibly better quality. I haven't played a current Gretsch.
