Fieball
Hi I am new to the forum and have a question about authentication. I have my Father's Gibson SJ Deluxe acoustic guitar, the serial number is A004191 engraved in the rear of the head above the 6 turning keys. One site I have gone to says the A serial number was only used in 1949. It was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I need to know if all of this can be authenticated and is there a place in the Baltimore area that will do an appraisal on the guitar. Guitar Center here in Maryland showed me a 1970 SJ Deluxe that they selling for $2995.00 so you can see why I would like get it appraised before I try and sell it. Thanks fieball
Retired
Welcome, while I'm no expert by far and posting photos would greatly help so experts here could see what you have and the condition its in. As far as having the serial number, another thing for Authenticity you can try contacting Gibson Customer Service at 1-800-4GIBSON. Not sure how far back Gibson keeps records but they did tell me what I had, the price on it new and when they sold it that year, where it was made and whatever else you wanted to know. You can also E-mail them at: (service@gibson.com.) They should send you an E-mail back. Other then that wait for someone else who knows more. Dave F
As mentioned by Retired, post some pictures. I would post this one in the acoustic forum. Odds are someone over there has one. I think a Stamped headstock is going to date your guitar as being newer than 1949. The numbering series you're referring to is ink stamped on the neck block. If it has MADE IN USA I would date it 73-75 I believe the Deluxe models were only made in the mid 70's Norlin era. 1961-1969: 4,5 or 6 digit peghead stamped serial number for all models, no MADE IN USA stamped below. 1969-1975: 6 digit peghead stamped serial number, MADE IN USA stamped below. Gibson Serial Numbers, early to mid 1970's. All models, stamped in back top of headstock. "MADE IN U.S.A." stamped below the serial number in back top of peghead, in the same size type, and on two lines with "U.S.A." below the "MADE IN": 6 digits + A 1970 000000's 1973 100000's 1970-1975 200000's 1973-1975 300000's 1974-1975 400000's 1974-1975 500000's 1974-19756 00000's 1970-1972, 1974-1975 700000's 1970-1972 800000's 1973-1975 900000's 1970-1972 A + 6 digits 1973-1975 B + 6 digits 1974-1975 C + 6 digits 1974-1975 D + 6 digits 1974-1975 E + 6 digits 1974-1975 F + 6 digits 1974-1975

Dave F
Square shouldered also confirms the date. I would stick with the early to mid 70’s. You should find plenty of them on EBay and Reverb for a value estimate. Good Luck
