I've been hacking for 24 hours.

I entered a hackathon with work. We had to design an IoT device with the theme "smart city" in mind and solve a problem. In a couple of hours we have to pitch our idea to judges and hope to win a place on a tech acceleration scheme (funding, support, etc).

We were the only team to stay at it non stop and I think our idea is pretty good (monitoring and preventing blocked street drainage using a LoRaWAN chip to send data from an array of ultra sound sensors. I believe we're the only team who have a working device. We also have a real time database driving graphs in real time, some great branding (Brain drain, my idea!) and a website for the product, live on our own web space. All fully custom coded (including the firmware on the board).

Fingers crossed!

Hey, cool! I used to do hydrologic modeling. In the future they might be able to integrate the data from your DrainBrain into models of the drainage systems down at the Engineering Department to give real-time analysis of what's going on during storms so they can see what's working and what's not. That way they can dispatch resources to the right places during the storms and try to stay ahead of flooding events. Stuff like that.. Cool!! [thumbup] [thumbup]

That's all the pitches done. Unfortunately I just overheard the judges penalising us for being professionals in the field. It's a fair comment. I think we'll be runners up on that basis and win a development kit but I think the funding will go to one of the other teams.

Rabs, I cannot tell you how much I found the right job. I reckon less than 1% get to work at something they really enjoy. I only hope I can make it a permanent thing. While it's looking good it's still not set in stone.

We were a runner up, special recognition, highly commended and all that.

I have no hard feelings. There were 17 year olds giving it a good bloody effort. Well done to the winners, I say.

That's so good to hear man....

And from the way you describe the place it sounds like they are doing it the right way.. With a philosophy behind the work... Most tech places I have worked had no real vision or any idea about how to treat staff you just did your job without that sort of general reasoning on why you are doing it beyond being paid which I think for a creative industry isn't the right attitude... And as such I was made redundant more times than I care to remember.. If I were to guess based on my experience id say you have a really good shot here with good people doing it right I will keep my fingers crossed for you [thumbup]
