GuitarJunkie
I was at Lauzon Music in Ottawa today, and the guys asked if I wanted to see one of the Jimmy Page Customs (the 3 pickup Black Beauty with the Bigsby). I figured it was one of the VOS ones limited to 500 made. Turns out it's number 25 of 25 played, numbered and signed by the man himself!!!!!! The Custom Shop did the run of 500 VOS models that sold out at musiciansfriend for $5999, but like previous Page reissues (ie. the doubleneck), they also did a special run of 25. These 25 guitars were sent to Page and he played each one, then selected his favorite. This was designated as "1" and was kept by Jimmy. The others were numbered 2 through 25. The number is written on the back of the headstock and signed by Page in silver ink, and the case is signed in gold. There is also a special autographed certificate (not like a regular COA) with the details of the special run and a photo of Page bound in a special folder. Of the 24 released to the public, 21 went to the Guitar Center, 1 to Europe, 1 to Japan, and 1 to Canada. The canadian distributor took the names of all their Gibson Custom dealers and drew one name. Lauzon didn't even know anything about it until they got a call from Yorkville asking them if they wanted it. Apparently Guitar Center had an event that you had to buy tickets for, and then had a "lottery" for the opportunity to buy one at $25,000. Lauzon is selling theirs for $21,000 canadian. Considering it's number 25 of 25, this would be the one to own other than perhaps number 2. The salesman put gloves on to take it out and they haven't even plugged it in. This way, whoever buys it will be the first person since Jimmy to plug it in. Anyone interested can contact http://www.lauzonmusic.com/
Archer993
Thanks for that story. That's a lot of extra cash for an autograph - but past sales of Page's autographed signature guitars have been in the $55K - $80k range.
GuitarJunkie
That's what the guys at the shop were saying. Apparently, one of the signed 'burst reissues recently went on ebay for $87,000. You'd probably be able to double your money in about 3 years.
Gibson CS
Honestly...I really dont want anyones signature on my guitar. Les Paul on the headstock is excluded. lol Thats the only thing I didnt like about my SRV Stratocaster... The big cheesy"SRV" on the pickguard ( I changed it )...and his signature on the headstock. Stevie is my all time favourite blues guitarist...but I feel a little odd with all the....ummmmm endorsements shall we say.
Raptor
One of the played/signed bursts went for over $80K within a month of them coming out. It set a record price for a 'modern' used guitar. So these will probably double before the year is out. I am not a big fan of Page either and wouldn't buy the guitar except as an investment. I had a chance at one of the Murphy aged and one of the unlimited runs from his last burst, and I hated the neck profile. Yorkville had to fight to get one of the signed/played bursts in Canada for a customer. We only got one. The buyer also bought one of the Murphy and one of the unlimited runs and then promptly put them up for sale in BC for $100K. I don't know if they ever sold. There was a 12 year old kid who joined the forum shortly after and told us all that his dad had bought them all for him. We asked why they were at a store, and he said he loaned them to the store for display, until he (the kid) became a bit older and better player. We then asked 'why is the store offering them for sale?' and the kid vanished. If it weren't for their concerts he probably wouldn't be an LP icon, because a lot of his best songs were recorded using non-LPs. He didn't do anything innovative with it either. I have a book with someone using a violin bow on their guitar years before JP did it.

I'm half way through a book called "Jimmy Page, Magus Musician Man" and it's a great read for anyone who wants to know about the roots of the 1960s rock revolution and the guitar players behind it. It contains a lot of facts about who used what guitar and amp and how recording was done and how songs evolved. I've always loved Page's playing - his phrasing is unlike anyone else's IMHO. It might be hard to believe but Les Pauls were very rare in the UK in the early days - in fact Page may have been the first to have one with the Black Beauty he acquired. He did use a Telecaster early on but abandoned it for LP #1 that he bought from Joe Walsh. He then modified the electronics so he could split the bridge pickup as can be done in the Gibson Signature guitars. Anyway, my point is that I think the guy was a LOT more influential than most people realize - including myself. I salute you in your removal of the SRV sticker on your Strat - It's like me wanting to polish off the filmy VOS treatment on my black LP - except I haven't done it yet!!! Gibson CS
Im on the fence about Page... Zeppelin had some amazing songs. To alot of guys on here Zeps music is the soundtrack of their youth. But... I have also seen "The song remains the same" Sloppy playing, sloppy singing, and I for the life of me cant figure out why it was so popular. I know there is more to Page the that film, but man!...If I were to agree to put myself on film playing guitar, id want to be on top of my game. My summary... Page is a studio genius, and came up with some cool riffs.
GuitarJunkie
I have a feeling I'm going to get completely flamed for this, but when I was younger I bought into the whole "Page is a guitar god" thing. As I got older and wiser I now view him as a very good (but not great) guitar player who changed rock guitar forever but respect him more as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Gibson CS
I am a huge Jimmy Page fan, so I am biased and I dont care. When I watch Jimmy Page play I see a true "rockstar." First of all, he has the look- the longhair, the hungary-underfed-cigarette smoking image. The costumes he wore, the way he would prance, dance, and stumble around the stage. When you watch "TSRTS" pay attention to the syncronized movements, the way he used the theramiin, while moving his hands, the was which he would respond on his guitar,to Robert Plants vocals. The image he projects to me is a strung out-hungary-dynamic-high energy rockstar, and to me that is cool. as for his playing he is sloppy, and that is awesome. It's just my opinion, but look @ guys liek Vai, Pettrucci, Malmsteen, ect--- the point is, when you are such a fantastically clean guitar player, you end up getting faster and cleaner and faster and cleaner......... you lose you feeling, your chops blend in and no one can hear you. anyway if you guys love page as much as i do, here are 2 of my fav licks that he does tabbed out for ya( in the key of E), so master em like i have and hopefully you can pull off the solo for rock and roll, or communcaton breakdown @ the next jam session w/ ure friends ~ means bend 2 steps E---------------------------------###E----------------------------------------------12-15-14----12-15-14---12-15-18-17-15-- B----------12-15-------12-15-###B--12-15-14-12----12-15-14-12-----12-------------15------------15--------------------17 G----14~(16)----14~(16)----###G------------------14-----------------14---------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------###D--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------###A---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------###E----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gibson CS
i read in an issue of guitar world somethin to the effect of he was soo nervous that he had to stay up 3 strait days but while all the roadies and support people where high and drunk, no one in the band was under anything "excessive" while they where filming what does that mean, well i have no idea
FennRx
Sloppy playing' date=' sloppy singing, and I for the life of me cant figure out why it was so popular. .[/quote'] must be jimi hendrix syndrome. ok seriously, i didnt want to start an argument (i stayed silent on the other thread about LP icons) but i couldnt help but take a shot at raptor because he clearly has an axe to grind with Page as this is at least twice he has said the exact same thing - and that makes me laugh. Gibson CS
FennRx.... I agree with you on Hendrix too... All studio....great ideas and riffs, but it probably took 50 takes to get a decent track out of him. Live?....terrible! Anyone who says they saw him live and he was awsome... Well, you were probably quite high. Dont get me wrong. I like some Zeppelin & Hendrix, classic rock at its best. But, they werent the second coming by any means. I am just saying that I am not a big fan of his and do not see a lot of the hype. He did not use an LP in the studio for a lot of his best work. I think he even used a Supro on a couple of songs. So if it were not for his being seen playing an LP in concert so much, he might not be the icon he is. He is a good player, showman and businessman, but not my cup of tea. Also a lot of what people think he created had been done before. Slash is another big seller of LPs and I do not like him or his playing especially either. I also tried the last batch of his (JP) signature bursts and did not like the neck, so the only reason I would buy a guitar like the played/signed JPC is as an investment. [/quote'] I have no axes to grind with anyone FennRx, I am merely pointing out that a lot of the work that is considered to be JP's best was not recorded in studio using an LP. This is a historical fact. If anything I am pointing out that image is everything. JP played an LP on stage a lot, and so the public assumed that he used LPs on everything, everywhere. Thus he has become an iconic LP player, through his on stage image. Look at Eric Clapton, he created and played some of his best music using LPs and other Gibsons (in studio and on stage) with Cream and John Mayall, and yet he is seen by 95% of music listeners as a Strat man. He created some iconic music with Strats too. But again, since he was seen more (at least by lucid audiences) playing a Strat, a lot of his great Gibson music is forgotten. saturn
I know I've made this point on previous topics, but I'll repeat myself. It drives me nuts to see people paying such ridiculous prices for a guitar. Someone on the recieving end is laughing all the way to the bank! Why even bother using the nicest wood, or bothering to do a good job with the electronics or even setting up nice action when you know damn well it will NEVER be played. How many times have you seen on Ebay some stating "I bought this guitar as an investment and it has never left the case." Maybe I'm just a party pooper when it comes to collecting. Now I'll jump in on Page as a player. I am one of his biggest fans, but I do recognize that he can be sloppy. He can have a good night or bad night, depending on when you catch him. I've seen and heard live Zep that is much beter than Song. I too am amazed that he (and Plant) allowed some of that footage to be released. That's not even considering the cheezy fantasy stuff. But one thing to remember is that he really doesn't disguise his tone behind a bunch of gain. He mostly get's his distorton honestly through volume. I bet you would hear more mistakes from some of these shredders if thier tone wasn't so fuzzed out with gain. The thing I like best about Page is that his tone is so organic. It seems to come strait from his fingers, through the guitar and out the amp. You sometimes even hear his pick clicking on the strings, it's that pure. I have done so several times...obviously a strong opinion...otherwise i would just shut up about it.
