guitar_randy
Does it hurt or damage speakers or anything if you plug or unplug your guitar cable from your guitar without turning the volume down first?

AXE®
Loud Pops = Bad ... Assuming your talking about the volume on your amp and not your guitar. Someone makes a cable with a killswitch if you're going to be making a lot of guitar changes while playing.
callen3615
Loud Pops = Bad ... Thats true. Its just like turning you amp on standby before you power off.

Wouldn't the volume or energy going to the speakers be no more than if you were playing your guitar at the same volume, just makes an unpleasant sound, rather than amplified guitar notes? AXE®
no. Have you ever had someone bump your head and had the reverb springs make that lovely Kerpow sound? A little hum and pop not to much to worry about. It's those 100 watt pops that do the damage.

Dynadude
Regardless of whether is causes damage, which it does, why would you want to make that horrible "POP", and look like a fool while playing?
ninety1vee
i rigged up a killswitch to solve that...

Super24
I usually unplug from the amp first, to avoid that sound. Don't know if it does damage, it just sounds bad.
deepblue
I hate the "POP"...It cant be good for the speaker. Know whats worse?...Using a wireless unit and shutting off the power pack before you shut off the amp!
RudyH
I either shut the amp off or put it on standby before unplugging.
Hall
Good for amp before on or off set of power: standby first 5 mins at least standby last 5 mins at least Steve
djroge1
Good for amp before on or off set of power: standby first 5 mins at least standby last 5 mins at least Steve Also using the standby before shutting off the amp will dissapate the electrical current stored in your caps. Thundergod
I don't. The subject just came up earlier today talking with someone' date='and I was wondering if it damages anything or if it just makes an unpleasant sound.[/quote'] It will damage not only your speakers but your amp too... I can elaborate on the subject later (I'm with "the lady" right now... she is asking why I am in the forum... damn... AXE®
So unplugging your guitar before you turn your amp off is a good thing to do? No... It's like putting you're car in park before you turn the engine off...
Boston004681
I either shut the amp off or put it on standby before unplugging. Mine doesn't have a standby' date=' but i always turn it off before i unplug. It does have a good POP though. i dont think it's doing much damage. its got an output watts switch(please remind me the real name, a hot plate is an example of one. my new vox has one built in. see sig) on the back and its set WAY down. DRIVE THOSE TUBES!! YEAH!!! No... It's like putting you're car in park before you turn the engine off... Sounds about right. i didn't think so. i rigged up a killswitch to solve that... Nice idea. rdclmn7
A positive contact is louder than anything else going through your system. It might as well be a thunderclap, I'd rather not be the one to find out that at better than 50 or 100w, it might not be the best thing.
Thundergod
Simply put? Your amp and guitar works with electricity. Let me illustrate (this is simplified to give a better and clearer idea of why it can damage your amp).

Californiaman
Nice Thunder. You do the graphics yourself? I usually just turn the volume knob down or turn the amp off.
