Dennis G
Interseting in that the guys in the "early days" were looking for ways to distort their sound. After that, well, not so much. Thanks for the post!

merciful-evans
Much live Charlie Christian is distorted. Of course he wasn't going for that sound back then!
jdgm
Much live Charlie Christian is distorted. Of course he wasn't going for that sound back then! Â Minton's is the business. Small valve amp, CC single-coil pickup (?), reverb from the room. Probably not much more than 7-8khz on the tape which I believe was a wire recorder. I learnt the 1st solo once - ought to get it back. It has been sped up at least a semitone. Â One of the greatest guitar things I ever heard.....EVER..... dustymars
Brings back memories of my youth when in 1948 I accidentally dialed in a local radio station, out of someone's garage, playing Blues. I heard BB King. During my high school days our band picked up not only Blues and Rock-a-Billy, the new Rock sound came in. Never thought it would last since much of the guitar'ing was crude and lacked precision. It evolved. So did I. Wish my hands would allow me to play again, but arthritis is too bad. The good old days: Â Never heard the big city DJ's, we had WLAC out of Nashville :)
LWAG
It all started with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHdlSolwktU and that's where guitar distortion comes from.
LWAG
I saw that video, and, it seems to me, the guy who stabbed his amp's speaker cone with a pencil sounded amazing. Rumble, IMO, should have been huge, way huge than that a song where the guy slashed his speaker cone, the guy who stabbed his with a pencil got an awesome sound it seems... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucTg6rZJCu4
