Best/Worst investments

Bluemoon

Recommended Posts

Other than you guitar, what has been your best gear purchase (and worst/undecided)

Best

1. Bone nut for my LP

2. Fulltone OCD (so I can drive my Blues Jr. at low levels and still get that natural tube crunch)

3. Virtuoso polish

Worst

1. Vox Wah

2. Vox Amplug

3. ISP decimator (works really well, but kills your sustain)

Undecided

1. Valve Junior (never could find the sweet spot--still working on it)

2. Weber Attenuator (a little too much tone sucking for my liking/but helpful for late-night playing)

Best:

Schaller straplocks

Pickup covers

Boss Loop station

Worst:

Boss PW10

Vox Wah

(don't get me wrong... I just dont use wah at all, but always end up buying one "just becasue" and then I just stare at how good they look in the pedalboard, but never use them)

Undecided:

Vox AC30 (just because there are so many damn amps out there, I love mine but love others too and some of them cost half of what the vox costed).

Gibson TP6 tailpiece... great tool, looks good, works as expected, a little to high priced, and why the hell does gibson make it in a finish that doesnt match the rest of the hardware???

Best:

Historics

Orange Tiny Terror

Boss ME-50

Obviously the Historics rule. The Tiny Terror smokes my HRD. The Boss ME-50 for what it is and what I need it for is perfect- and the wife likes it cause they're are fewer wires and cords laying around.

Worst:

DOD Death Metal

Fender Champion 600

Gibson Les Paul Classic

as for the DOD, nothing more needs to be said. The Champ 600 just does not sound good when you actually use the power tube. I sometimes use the Guvnor pedal to make it a bit more palatable. But its definitely not worth the price tag. The LP Classic was a total turd. I modded the sh!t out of it and could never get a good tone.

Worst:

Fender Champion 600

The Champ 600 just does not sound good when you actually use the power tube.

I believe that what's happening with your Champion is that when you actually use the crappy stock power tube, your crappy stock speaker might be overdriving.

And as a second thing, the stock tubes are all crappy.

The Champion 600 is a good tube amplifier in it's shiny stock condition. But it's like 60% of the tone you can achieve with some avaiable mods.

BUT, you might have already modded it heheheh

1. Thompson organ cry baby - just don't use it much

2. Digitech RP-50 - good at the time, now it just sits in the case

Undecided - too early to tell

1. Tone Pros locking bridge/tailpiece

2. DiMarzio Air Classic neck & Virtual Vintage PAF Hot

Best

1. Boutique Handwired Bassman (Heaven)

2. Champion 600 (Excellent tool)

3. Graphite for nut (tames my SG)

4. Schaller Straplocks

5. High quality guitar cable (now I hear my instruments)

6. MG Music Space City (it's undescribable)

7. MG Music Alein Booster (it's quite like the analogman beano booster)

8. High quality pedal cables (how you think you'll get a good tone with loads of bad cables in your signal chain?)

9. Fender Mini Tone Master

Worst

1. Dunlop Straplocks

2. Boss compressor sustainer (and it's the second time I bought it)

Undecided - too early to tell

1. EHX Tube Zipper

Best : (other than my LP - far and away the best thing I've bought in my whole life)

1) MusicMan 2x12 combo, 30 years ago last month.

2) Un-branded natural leather strap. Even older than the amp.

Both still in daily use.

Worst :

1) MusicMan Sabre II; Black, Black plastics, Maple Neck, Active circuitry. "Super-Strat" that did everything exactly wrong.

2) 1984 '1963' Fender Telecaster Custom re-issue. One-Great-trick Pony. Wholly inferior to Strats in every other respect.

Neither stayed more than a year.

Undecided :

1) Flight-case for my first axe. Custom made, it ended up costing more than the thing it protected. Poor cash-balance.

2) MusicMan Sabre II again; I went in to buy a '73 LP Custom which was truly awful. Did I choose wisely, though???

Boss Compression sustainer Pedal (could never hear any difference)

Not even in sustain?

Well, what amp and what guitar did you use?

I mainly use mine when I have to play wth Solid State amps, because they don't have that tube compression that I need. But I must say that with tube amps it does not sound right.

Not including my LP's;

Best:

1. Hardcase for my LP studio

2. Schaller strap locks

3. Boss BF-3 Flanger

Worst:

1. Marshall TSL60 (Appallingly unreliable piece of s**t)

2. Boss PW-10

3. Line 6 Spider II (Sounds rubbish)

Undecided:

1. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (Best sounding amp I've ever had but not enough clean headroom for my needs)

2. Line 6 HD147 (Bomb-proof amp that sounds good and does everything I need - except sound like a top quality tube amp).

3. Mexican Fender 60's classic strat

Best:

- Coffin Blood Drive overdrive pedal.

- BBE Sonic Maximizer.

- Boss Micro BR (I don't record with it but use the MP3, drums and effects features quite a bit, excellent for travel or headphone playing)

Worst:

- Boss GT-6 (I just don't use it. bought it on clearance so I will not lose much when I sell it.)

- Boss Dyna Drive (better used with single coils but I hardly ever use it)

- My Casino Special Edition but just because of the price, I love the sound but Epiphone's craftsmanship is hit or miss. I mean this is a Custom Shop, whatever that means in the Epi world and the guitar has shoddy F holes, a toy plastic nut that is 1mm too short on each side and several screws on the guitar are too tight (and stripped) bending metal and plastic.

Undecided:

My amps, all of them. My classic 30 is OK but not great, my epi valve junior is OK but not great, my champ 600 head that I made is OK but not great. My Beringher SS practice amp flat out sucks.

If I knew then what I know now I would simply have abought a Mesa Express 5:25 when they came out.
