No new CITES permits during Gov't shutdown

Recommended Posts

Got this from the Performing Arts Alliance today. Could be bad news if you are shipping or travelling and don't already have a permit....

Permits for International Travel with Protected Species Instruments

If you or your organization already holds a CITES permit to support a tour, that permit can be put to use, but new ones will not be issued during the shutdown. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is partially affected by the shutdown, with a subset of employees designated as exempt from a shutdown to perform necessary functions while many others are not authorized to work. While CITES permit applications can be sent to the agency, the issuance of permits is suspended until USFWS re-opens, at which point there is likely to be a backlog. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and USFWS port inspection sites are funded through fees, so those services will continue through the shutdown, cargo will be inspected, and permits will be credentialed. Some senior staff at the port may be furloughed, so it may be best to address any questions to inspectors.

Reckon Trump should build a wall of Marshalls on the border instead.

You're onto something there. Just blast "In a Gadda Da Vida" straight south with about a million watts of Marshall. Life as we know it could be wiped out all the way to Antarctica.

Hmm, there might be a building or two in Washington, DC that you could use the same treatment on.

It might be a pain to deal with this if you bring your guitar out of the country. But imagine what it must be like to do the paperwork for a symphony orchestra with a whole string section full of vintage instruments on an international tour? [crying]
