i also thought that was a little unusual, and i suspect the whammy neck thing probably could cause that, as steve said above.

i don't do the whammy neck thing, it's just not something i use. but i remember a few guitars i had that did that (not gibbys) and they were budget guitars i would lean against a wall or something. i never gave it any thought, because they were knock-about pieces i bought because i didn't plan on worrying about them. there was a time when i had several cheap guitars spread out all over town so when i was hanging with a buddy or a girlfriend, i'd have a guitar there i didn't have to carry with me.

I wonder why he did not show how he holds the body and pushes the neck forward with his other hand trying to detune a note? That would be how this would happen and not by regular playing. And who cares if he buys another gibson or not? I sure dont!

He might be using the neck as a whammy bar, that will do it.

None of my Gibsons have EVER developed cracks at the neck joint or nut.

We're talking 40 years of owning the things, too.

I thing Steve nailed it. If he is using his head stock at a tremolo bar, I could see those areas effected.

I don’t think there’s a problem at all with those guitars. Not going to sit here and rationalize it because all I have to go by is some guy showing some cracks on a guitar and his honest to god story about them via YT. All I have to say is the necks are still in the guitar and the headstock are intact. I don’t know, when things get old they start to look old. Don’t know how fast or slow that happens but inevitably so. And none of my Gibsons have this going on. They look and play great...

My '79 SG has been VERY heavily played, and I DID use the neck as a tremelo (i.e., bend the neck slightly in with the hand toward the strings) -- that guitar still plays flawless with no issues like he has seen (no neck dive either). Just one data point...

This has to be caused by something he does when the guitars are out of their cases. I've owned many Gibsons over the years at different price points, as well as other manufacturer's and never had a bridge move like that or seen finish cracks at the neck/body joint. I even had an SG that I used to whammy a little by holding the lower horn with the right hand and pressing the neck forward with the left and it didn't develop this problem. He seems to really like to bash Gibson quality regardless. [thumbdn]

I have a 135 that has a similar finish crack at the joint. I had it checked and the luthier mentioned the curing of the nitro and the humidity levels in ones home can lead to these, he checked it all over and assured me it was 100% cosmetic. That guitar was purchased 20 years ago, I still have it, and it still plays 100% fine. I don't think, in this case, it's much more than that.

Hi All. Just being honest here with my opinion as I have seen several of Darrel's videos in the past and personally, I just kind of think this guy is kind of a dork. I mean, he's an OK guitar player and very enthusiastic about guitars - like many of us - but I think he's a little more enthusiastic about it more than others. I don't know... It's hard for me to explain, but when I listen to this guy talk and the subjects he brings up, etc. It's just not worth me watching. I mean, he makes public videos of the modifications he puts on his guitars just to show them off in a bragging like sense - like anyone really cares about your "Custom" Warmouth guitar (and I just love how his Canadian accent annunciation of Warmouth comes out, haha!). The subject matter he presents is very subjective. Basically, I'd rather not watch his channel and if it weren't for this board posting referring to this guy's nonsense, I'd have passed right by his crap. Honestly, I blocked this guy's channel from coming up on my video feed because I couldn't take it anymore. So that being said, I don't have any idea what this guy is dealing with and it is a stupid video. He's obviously an OCD freak too with his guitars. I mean, what's the purpose of this video from my viewer standpoint? Oh, I'm sorry Darrel your childhood dream has been smashed like a big poop in a diaper. I actually like my Gibson's even more now that they aren't cracking the finish on the neck heel and nut. I play them, case them, put them on a wall hanger... Maybe Darrel pissed someone off and they decided to find the best way to irritate him - and it apparently worked if that be the case. Anyhow who flipping cares. If he's another Gibson basher that demands perfection, then take a ticket and wait your turn in line. That's the problem today is that everyone has an opinion and we can now go online to find someone who agrees for self-validation. I'm really trying to be one not to go to negativity here, but come on, this guy has irritated me for quite some time, and when his videos come up in my feeds, it's like coming across a channel on TV I just want nothing to do with. Sorry if you're a Darrel Braun fan, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers on it, but this thread is called "Opinions". Maybe I gave more than one's money's worth. Maybe his next video is about how GIbson's all have imported parts on them. Just wait, it's coming...

EDIT: Don't let Darrel know we are having a thread on this subject. He will make another video on this! Please, I beg you all!!!

Who cares if he makes another video. Its like the a crappy TV show I don't like. I know its there I just choose not to watch. Same thing.

Yeah, that was a joke... Obviously not a good one then. I wasn't the one who brought this guy up in the thread. I am simply saying that I think he is one of those crappy TV shows on YT and I tell my video feed to not send me notifications of him. I like guitars, I look them up online. Ran into this guy back a while ago, watched some of his videos, made a decision not to want to get notified about this guys channel. Best wishes to the guy, but his content is not my favorite.

this is the trouble with YouTube, and joker with a camera and a tad of know how, can setup a channel and instantly become an expert.

I don't have a problem on the other hand, with the video shown here, he really doesn't say anything more than voice his disappointment with the things he sees, and asks if any one else sees the same. I can understand why he may be a bit disappointed with the situation, but it really is all cosmetic. Wood moves, seasons change, it's nitro,, sh*t happens...

I think he's making a tad more out of it than is necessary. just play the dam things..

That was a few boring minutes of my life that I'll never get back. As others have said, sounds like he's using the neck of his guitar as a whammy bar, banging them around pretty hard in the case, or stacking them on top of each other. Hope he stops doing that and that everything works out for him.

This guy (Nelson) made a video to "compliment" Darrel's video.

I like this fella though. Nelson can be pretty entertaining and I've watched his luthier skills improve quite a bit - as he's made quite a few videos by now. He's taught me quite a bit through his videos and every time he makes a new one, I like watching them most of the time. If this video is your first impression of him, I'm sorry Nelson!
