New USA Winter line up

So it looks like theres a reason a lot is missing from the main site. I don't know if this is all they are offering, or this is on top of whats already been out for the 2019 models..

https://www.gearnews.com/namm-2019-gibson-goes-back-to-the-golden-era-with-new-2019-guitars/

After missing last year’s show, Gibson is back with a vengeance! Yes, it’s made mistakes in the past, but this company looks like it’s about to rectify them.

Gibson Golden Era NAMM 2019

“We’re paying tribute to the Golden Era of Gibson by restoring authenticity for musicians with our new lineup of Classics,” says Cesar Gueikian, GIBSON’s Chief Merchant Officer. He then goes on to say: “True to our DNA, our new Les Paul Standard returns to the classic design that made it famous. And the same can be said of other models.”

All great inspiring words, but let’s hope these guitars are perfect. As the brand has work to do to reclaim its crown as a great American guitar company

New CEO, new outlook?

Gibson, you’ll remember, has a new CEO, James “JC” Curleigh. And in case you hadn’t noticed, the company has re-vamped and tidied up its website. This once great American brand is fighting back in style.

We have the following models to look forward to at this year’s Winter NAMM – and it is all back to ‘Golden Era’ specifications and construction ideals.

There is a now a new Les Paul Standard ‘50s spec, plus a Les Paul Standard ‘60s spec as well as one with P90 pickups. Then we have a Les Paul Special in TV Yellow and Les Paul Junior Tobacco Burst.

Last up are my two favourites of the bunch, an SG Standard and two new 61 spec SG’s with “maestro” and “sideways” Vibrolas. There is also a rather tasty looking Explorer in there as well!

Signature Models

Gibson has also teamed up with Chuck Berry’s son and grandson to re-create Berry’s famed ES-350T model. That follows on from the new Chris Cornell tribute release we saw yesterday.

They have plenty of new guitars for 2019 and so hopefully, this year will be the start of the company getting back on top

Im wondering if the Traditional and Classic are being replaced with a 50s and 60s based Standard.. Which I actually think makes sense. I never understood why the Classic and Trad models where that much cheaper than a Standard. They are pretty much all the same thing....

Now we just have to wait and see what the cost of the new line up will be.

There should also be some kind of DC in that line up.. Either a Special or Standard.. I don't understand why they hold back on the DC shape? (ohh and something with mini humbuckers would be cool).

Epiphone just released this

All looks great but what's that red burst LP at the back? An HM jobbie?

And where is the Les Paul Custom?

I hope they are going to reinstate that in all its ebony-boarded glory... [-o<

They are still down as Richlite at the moment..

I think they would be better off going with that Ebano stuff.. Seems just as good and will be more consistent with a large supply available.

All very interesting stuff.

Are Gibson going to start up amp production too?

The various LPs, SG and Explorer all look really gorgeous (I particularly like the colour of the 1960 'burst) but one unexpected stand-out (IMO) is that the Epi DC looks V. Nice Indeed!

I hope the main price-point direction will be more USA-line and not Custom Shop.

Going 'Back to Basics' - aka 'The Golden Age' - in terms of specs, sizes and shapes (the bevels on the SG look very good from what I can see in the snap) is something which has been discussed here ad nauseam so here's hoping the new management team can make this idea work. It's definitely looking good so far. Fingers Crossed!

"Gibson is also teasing 'a new concept with the Les Paul and SG Modern', based on dealer, artist and guitar enthusiastic input. These models feature 'many contemporary updates that players have embraced such as lighter-weight bodies, innovative slim taper neck profiles for full-access to the high frets, ebony fingerboards, high-output versatile pickups and a push-pull control system to pivot between the humbucker and the P-90 sounds, both of which have defined so many genres of music since we invented them'”.

Id like to see that.. Gibson amps voiced for certain guitar models. That'd be cool..

I wondered the same thing. It seems recently when Gibson shows off their guitars they always have various Gibson amps positioned in the background. The ones in the pictures above look damn near new. I would definitely be interested in plying a Gibson branded amp to compare to what I have. Seems like there is some interest from players for Gibson amps. I don't know if there is a large enough interest to justify production though. Good looking guitars headed our way for 2019 it appears too. I really like the SG with tremelo. I would love to see a more authentic Flying V and Firebird I with proper tuners (not the full size grovers AMS had fitted on their limited 2018 run). May have to break my guitar buying dry spell in 2019.

Digging the second les paul and the SG. They look fantastic. However, how much will these be now? A new firebird in 2017 was 1499.99. Now they are 1999.99. So I wonder what that new SG standard with Maestro trem will cost now? 2599.99 maybe? Damn.........I am scared to know!

But no Reissue Reverse & Non Reverse Firebirds like Brian Jones of "The Rolling Stones" played? 2 of the coolest Guitars of all time!!!

Very true. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Gibson Firebird is one of the sexiest guitar models ever made. Maybe these are just a few of the offerings with more to come.

I'm with you on the pricing. Go back to the dreaded year 2015. A firebird came in at a cool $2,100 bucks. Currently AMS has a SG with tremelo listed at $1,999. I like the finish on the 19' model better.

If I ever go guitar shopping again a reverse Firebird VII would be at the top of my list.

I stupidly sold my metallic red one years ago to buy some stereo speakers and will probably have to replace it sooner or later.

If you haven't played one they're not quite like the Firebird V.

The best way to describe it is by comparing other guitars.

The Lucille feels different than a 335 due to the fat neck and ebony fret board.

The Firebird VII feels like a Lucille, the Firebird V feels like a 335.

Both good but different.

I just jumped on the Gibson website and they have the new Winter NAMM guitars featured above. The SG with Maestro Trem is listed at $1,999.00 and is listed as "coming soon". Another small change it appears they've thrown in is the logo on the flying v headstock. I don't believe I've ever seen one in that position before. Looks odd to me.

The Flying V should have the strings go through the body hint, hint.

That was one of it's most distinctive features.

Firebird V has disappeared, SG Custom w/ Richlite is over 3 grand, looks like all of the low frets have disappeared.

This is going to be an interesting year for them.

They've never done Brian Jones Reissues? One of the coolest Dudes in Rock History! He was a Rock Star! Always looked Cool! He always had the coolest Guitars too. Both of his Firebird VII's were the coolest of cool Guitars. The Sunburst Reverse Firebird 3 MHB's, Maestro, outfitted with gold hardware & his Non Reverse Sunburst Firebird 3 MHB's, Maestro also outfitted in gold hardware...

Not only do they look badass they sound badass! Don't believe me? Listen to some Johnny Winter!!!

I love my Firebird V, but, I'd Love to see Gibson offer Both of the Firebirds I mention above.....I'd sell a handful of my Guitars & add both to my collection.... Not to be wall hangars. They would be played all the time!

Small and (usually) quite heavy.

Using a Les Paul as an example, the Firebird VII felt like my old 25th Anniversary Les Paul, the Firebird V feels like my Studio.

As you know the upper tier Gibsons have a distinctive feel to them which is probably due to the ebony.

One odd thing about the VII was that only the neck pick up sounded really good, the other ones were kind of wimpy.

I hear you on that L. I remember when I had finally advanced enough to justify to my parents for an upgraded guitar. At the time I really didn't know much other than Fender and Gibson and not much after that as far as the different models offered by each. So I sat down and started scrolling through images of my favorite bands and every time I came across Skynyrd images Allen Collins always had that firebird in hand. I watched LS live a steeltown dvd for hours on end and Ricky Medlocke always broke a bird out for simple man, which is my favorite song of all time. So after that I scoured the Internet and at the time Epiphone had a firebird VII (not the model collins used but close enough) in vintage sunburst. I jumped all over it. I still have it and although it's not a great guitar it means a lot to me. If I had the money to do so I would like to have all the firebird models in my collection. Nice to see others lust after those guitars as I do.

So Ebony fingerboards for a Standard but Richlite on a Custom.. Hmmmm.... :-k

Maybe also they will actually start to release the guitars in the actual year of the model rather than three or four in the previous year..

There's nothing authentic about those ugly Grover tuners. They work well, but they look out of place on a Gibson. Between them and no more low frets any more Gibsons I buy will be used ones. I stopped buying new Fenders for the same reason. I don't like frets that feel like railroad tracks.
