Rabs
https://www.christies.com/features/David-Gilmour-legendary-Black-Strat-comes-to-auction-9637-3.aspx David Gilmour’s legendary ‘Black Strat’ comes to auction Christie’s to auction more than 120 guitars from the personal collection of the Pink Floyd singer and songwriter, including the iconic Fender Stratocaster played on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall David Gilmour’s 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster has earned its place in rock’n’roll history. Known as ‘The Black Strat’, the guitar was purchased in 1970 at Manny’s on West 48th Street in New York, and has become the Pink Floyd singer and songwriter’s most identified instrument over the course of nearly 50 years. Between 1970 and 1986, The Black Strat was Gilmour’s primary performance and recording guitar, and was key to the development of the Pink Floyd sound. It was played in the recordings of landmark albums such as the 1973 masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon, which includes the track Money and is widely regarded as one of the greatest LPs of all time; Wish You Were Here (1975), featuring the track Shine on You Crazy Diamond, which Gilmour reveals ‘came out of’ The Black Strat; Animals (1977); and The Wall (1979), which features Gilmour’s legendary guitar solo on Comfortably Numb. The Black Strat, which has been extensively modified over the decades to accommodate Gilmour’s evolving style and performance requirements, can also be heard on his critically acclaimed solo albums including David Gilmour (1978), About Face (1984), On an Island (2006) and Rattle that Lock (2015). On 20 June at Christie’s in New York, this iconic, solid-body electric guitar (estimate: $100,000-150,000) will be a highlight of The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, which comprises more than 120 instruments and focuses on a selection of his preferred Fender Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters. Not only the largest and most comprehensive sale of guitars ever offered at auction, the collection details the musical history of one of the world’s most influential guitarists. All proceeds from the sale will benefit charitable causes. ‘Many of the guitars in this sale are guitars that have given me a tune,’ says Gilmour in our short film, in which he plays for us a few chords from his best-loved songs on the guitars that helped to inspire them. ‘So a lot of them have earned their keep, you might say. ‘These guitars have given so much to me, and it’s time for them to move on to other people who hopefully will find joy, and perhaps create something new.’

pippy
Interesting news! Why on earth would he want to sell his guitar? I can't imagine he's in need of the money ... I'm guessing he's doing it to raise funds for his charity in a similar fashion to EC's various 'Crossroads' auctions over the years. Back in the early 2000's he gave all the proceeds from the sale of his £4.5m London house to the homeless charity Crisis. Although the Black Strat's an incredibly iconic guitar remember that he didn't even use it for almost two decades after he bought his CAR Strat and it's a mish-mash of about a dozen different things! The white Strat is something else again. A '54 gold-anodised 'guard example made by Tadeo Gomez carrying serial # 0001. It wasn't the first made, of course, but it's very very early. Oddly enough I've 'known' this guitar without realising it since c. 1980 when I bought Ken Achard's 'The Fender Guitar' book. It was shown full-page, the ownership wasn't mentioned and the photo was captioned "1955 Stratocaster...Photo : Seymour Duncan". At the time I didn't even know who Seymour Duncan was... The '55 GT, as is now well known, was the one used for the solo on Another Brick...Pt. II. There were loads of Gilmour's guitars to be seen in the "Their Mortal Remains" retrospective in the V&A in 2017 including the Black, the White, a '59 tri-tone and the Candy Apple Red Strats; a '62 bound Tele; a very early BlackGuard Esquire and the '55 G-T not to mention Waters' black Precision bass. To be Up Close and Personal to all those instruments was something quite special. I expect the reserves will prove to be nowhere even close to what the star guitars will actually fetch. Pip. I think the Greeny 59 is the most expensive guitar.. I heard rumors which if course unless you know Kirk or the people involved is only a rumour that he paid like 2 million for it. That GT by rights with its Gibson history let alone the owned by status and the music he used it for, should go for some serious cash....

SteveFord
What I take away from this is that he walked into Manny's and bought some new or leftover guitars, maybe some used ones and off he went. Same as Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, the Beatles, Stones, a pimply kid from Cheesequake, NJ who went on to work for the DMV as a records clerk. As long as you've got a high quality starting point it's the player, not the magic instrument. Who is to say that the items hanging up at Guitar Center aren't the OMG! MUST HAVE!!! (read in Flo and Eddie groupie voices) auction pieces of the future?

Murph
It's hard to protect those kind of assets and he's getting up in years. I could imagine "Crooks" plotting a way to steal iconic instruments, scams, outright break in's, it would be a constant thought of your mind. Good on him. MichaelT
I liked how he was talking about wanting a Strat and said this: What attracted you to Stratocasters in the first place? My boyhood dream was to have a Stratocaster like Hank Marvin in the Shadows had. It was the guitar I always wanted. Lots of other players came along who did nothing but submit to that. Hendrix wasn’t bad on a Strat. It was the guitar of my dreams. When I could afford one, I got one. My first Fender, though, was a Telecaster that my parents bought me for my 21st birthday. Hendrix wasn't bad on a Strat. Ya think? :D That one made me laugh. I'm glad he's doing it for charitable cause rather than greed. I hope they do well. I hope they do well. Yes, he does a lot for various charities. Good Bloke. I wonder if the auction will also feature the strap he uses with the black Strat. It was given to him as a present from his wife in 2006 and was previously owned by......Jimi Hendrix! Pip.
