bigtim Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Well my curiosity got the best of me today and I actually sat down and gave Gibson a phone call about my 2008 les paul custom I have just purchased. This is the first time I have ever done this. The reason I did it was because when I searched online for other pictures of a candy apple red custom shop les paul custom only a candy apple red standard keeps popping up from 2008. So when I gave the rep my serial number he did confirm mine was candy apple red and that the color was not part of the line up of colors for the other les paul customs from that year that was produced. I also told him about the witch hat knobs, gibson deluxe tuning keys and the abr bridge. He then said it was an exclusive run for one of the official Gibson dealers. So he had no documentation stating for what retailer received them. So this was an exclusive run candy apple red for Guitar Center that was purchased by the original owner from the state of Illinois in 2008 before he moved to TN. To the best of my knowledge, these are the specs for what I have in my own words. 2008 Les Paul Custom. The regular colored Gibson Les Paul Customs from 2008 had an MSRP of $5500.00 according to the rep. I spoke with. So this one may have been slightly higher. The original owner did state he paid over $4000.00 for it. Candy Apple Red, Chambered Body, Ebony fretboard with MOP inlays, Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 PAF pick ups, Gold Hardware, Abr-1 Bridge, Gibson Deluxe Tuning Keys and Top Hat volume and tone knobs. The neck Profile seems to be fatter than a 60's style but not as fat as a 50's style. Somewhere in between. I am also assuming that it has a maple cap as well. It certainly sounds as if it does to me. I do not know the string nut material but it is probably the tusq type. I did all of this because I cannot find the Official Specs for this guitar since it was a bit too old being from 2008. I actually took the pick ups out to see which ones were in there. I guess it is kind of a rare one since I have not been able to see a picture of this exact color and hardware feature on any les paul custom from 2008. I do not know if the color adds overall value to it or not. However I would have been just as happy if it were any color as well. It just turned out I ran across one this color. Sorry if I have rambled on a bit but thought some of you would be interested to know this as well.
FemmeParallell Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 First time i see a custom in candy apple red! so you got a limited run in good condition, hopefully for the right price too
bigtim Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Well I do not know if I posted the price yet but I do not see why not to do so. I am not rolling in money by any means and the guitar I paid the most money for previously was my 2017 gibson Firebird which cost me 1499.99 from Sweetwater. I know to some of you that may be a drop in the bucket. But I paid more for this 2008 and I do think I purchased it for a very reasonable price. It cost me $2200.00 cash. The man was a collector of guitars and he does not hardly play guitar. This one was the least expensive guitar he had for sale too. I tell you this man was the type of fellow that had guitars he purchased from the Hard Rock cafe in his home. Out of his respect and all I will not go into detail on what he was selling other than some of them were EXPENSIVE!! And although that stuff was flattering and cool to see and hold in person.....my eyes could not get past the one I went there to get which is prettier in person. FemmeParallell Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 wow, sounds like he had a guitar museum at his house hehe, thats cool that he had the change to have them and also you got to see them i think $2200 is a very fair price, and for the condition its in its a bargain, i've seen newer customs way more pricey than that Well I do not know if I posted the price yet but I do not see why not to do so. bigtim Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate it.
Big Bill Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 It cost me $2200.00 cash. From the pics I think you got one hell of a deal. Did you make your wife sleep on the couch, while the Lester takes her side of the bed?
pippy Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 ...It cost me $2200.00 cash.... Echoing Bill and Femme's comments I also thing you got a fantastic deal! Had I been asked I'd have thought at least $1k higher and even then it would have been well worth the asking. Add-in the now-discovered 'rarity value' and it's wonderful that you got such a superb instrument to enjoy and cherish. Sounds like you deserved it, too. Congrats! Pip.
bigtim Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 Ha ha ha!! You know what though.....she knew just from being around me for 14 years that I could bot pass it up. She was so sweet when I brought it home to show her that her mouth dropped open and she actually said WOW! She knows how much it meant to me. And she knows ot is not going anywhere as well. From the pics I think you got one hell of a deal. Did you make your wife sleep on the couch, while the Lester takes her side of the bed?

Yeah buddy, it's always exciting when we get a new guitar, especially the bargain you got. It's even better when the wife joins in the celebration.
NighthawkChris Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Yeah bigtim, you got a steal man! I would have gladly paid that for that guitar - especially in the excellent condition it is in. I don't know what it is, but I'm a sucker for red guitars... They just look sweet to me - but of course, not every guitar that is red I think is great. But damn, that LP in that candy apple red is delicious looking, haha! Many years of enjoyment my friend and congratulations again!
bigtim Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 Thanks man....I do not know if I really deserved it but....I dang sure did not pass it up!! Loving it actually! He was just asking 2600 for it in the add too but he had so many listed and did not say it was a custom in the ad. He dropped it to 2200.00 because he knew I was going to enjoy it and keep it. He could have probably got way more for it he wanted to. Echoing Bill and Femme's comments I also thing you got a fantastic deal! bigtim Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 Thank you very much. It is the absolute best one I have ever had. Hope it has warmed up where you are today. I talked to my buddy this morning and he lives in Copemish MI. It was 4 degrees there this morning. Yeah bigtim, you got a steal man!
