Local shop reunites with Gibson

i received a “what’s new” email from a local small dealer announcing that they will soon sell Gibson acoustics again. The shop was a five star dealer and sold quite a few Gibsons mixed in with Taylors and a few lower cost brands.

They stopped their relationship when it became difficult to work with Gibson and were required to carry more stock than they were comfortable with. Seems the new management team is more flexible. They apparently worked out the details at the recent NAMM event.

I’ll need to stop in and get more details, but I’m very happy to have heard the good news.

I was wondering when this wold start to happen. With the way Gibson was doing it before, I felt like they were sort of shooting themselves in the foot so to speak. I had seen several local shops drop Gibson in the last few years because of Gibson's unreasonable demands on Gibson deciding the minimum amount of inventory that a shop needed to carry to remain a Gibson dealer. Hopefully this is a sign of things changing for the better for both Gibson and the local shops.

Great news!

This is exactly what I was hoping might happen when we discussed this at length in a previous thread.

Just prior to the big-box/online move, when we had multiple long-time & vested local dealers, I could walk into a store and get my hands on a J-200, J-100, J-185, J-45, WM-45, L-130, & others (there must have been Doves & Hummingbirds available, but I didn't look for square shoulders - not my cup of tea).

Renew those relationships & let the positive buzz flow!

I am guessing your definition of "small" is different than mine. The references here seem to be geared more to independent stores such as Fuller's, Mass Street Music, and Daves who not only have widespread reputations but also have a large internet presence. It does appear that Gibson has been good to its word and has made it easier for dealers to market the guitars. But The key is has Gibson dropped their rather draconian buy in policy.

Zombie, the local shop I'm talking about is really small. No web presence to speak of, 3 employees, shop is one room, probably physically 50' x 200' with storage upstairs. They appeal to local "collectors", some players, and some upscale buyers here in my area, who may or may not play very well, but like cool looking "stuff."

They will deal on price and that's somewhat unusual for a small shop. Plus, the owner is very knowledgeable about his products and a really nice person.

Fuller’s Vintage Guitar should be announcing this very soon as well.

Fuller's now has pictures from their first Gibson shipment on their instagram. They are electrics, but their website has been updated to say they are an acoustic 5 star dealer. Can't wait to see what exclusive models they commission. Love my Fuller's Vintage 1939 J-35 Reissue.

This is very smart of Gibson. Taylor has been wiping the floor with them in the last few years by building cozy relationships with anyone who wanted to sell their guitars. I watched Gibson's presence in guitar stores dwindle down to the point where I had to go further and further to find them, to the point where they were only available at Guitar Centers, and even then many of those would only have a J-15, a J-45 and a few electrics and no custom shop gear. So yeah, glad to see that trend reversing.

No, not Elderly. They are MUCH larger than the shop I’m referring to. I’m talking about Detroit Guitar, located in Birmingham Michigan. Not sure if Elderly will patch things up with Gibson or not. They parted ways quite a while before other shops threw in the towel. Not sure it was for the same reason as others.

Don’t know if Detroit Guitar has started receiving any instruments or not. Probably not yet.
