Nighthawk tuning

Love my new Nighthawk but it's not friendly to tune.

What is the ratio of the stock tuners ?

Are they considered to be decent quality?

Intonation issues are almost always more to do with the nut slots or bridge slots being too tight and binding the strings.

It's very rare for the tuning machines to be at fault.

The current Nighthawk specs say 18:1 Grovers, the previous Nighthawks list 14:1 Grovers. In either case these are very smooth machine heads and should not cause tuning problems. I have both and no trouble, but personally prefer the faster reacting higher ratio 14:1 Grovers.

If you are having difficulty tuning and the string seems to jump past the sweet spot, it is most likely the nut slots are grabbing the strings, like Parabar said. This is not an unusual problem for a new Epiphone, specially if you upgrade to heavier strings from their standard 9 thru 46 set. The slots may need to be a little bit wider but not deeper..

If you tune and it doesn't seem to work in all positions the intonation may need to be checked.

Also make sure you stress the strings prior to tuning, new fresh strings need to be stretched a bit before they will stay in tune.
