New member with a 88 Epi Sheraton

Hi from Sask, Canada.

Bought me first Gibson from a Regina pawnshop: 1988 Korean made 'Epiphone by Gibson' Sheraton in good condition. No dings or scratches, just some minor fret wear on the first 5 frets and some cosmetic wear on the brass colored hardware. The only real issue was that it had no strings and the bridge/saddle were in the storage compartment of the case. Not the ideal way to buy a guitar but with some assurance from the owner of the shop I bought the guitar ($350CAD or about $260US). Brought it home and installed some strings, adjusted the truss rod and saddle and set intonation and it plays wonderful in this rookies hands-I've only played rhythm guitar on an acoustic. My only problem I have is I snapped the low E saddle screw head. I over torqued the screw when the saddle bottomed out and "SNAP." Not my best moment but at least the saddle seat is in the correct spot and it functions, for now anyway. So... I registered on this forum to research a fix. I think I probably have a screw in my salvage bin of bit'n pieces that I could modify to work in the saddle, but I think I will replace the whole saddle. The problem is the mounting pins for the saddle are 72mm center to center and most saddles are built 74mm center to center. So my quest begins now!

Regards,

Mike

I think if I were doing it, and I was able to remove the broken screw, I would replace all six adjustment screws. That way they will all match.

That is a good point. I know the StuMac website sells a set of gold coloured bridge screws but someone commented in the reviews that they are 1/8" too short for the Epi Sheratons. For starters I need to remove a screw and find out the thread pitch and size of screw. The original screws have a narrow collar to accept a snap ring that holds the screw in place, but even if I find a screw without the collar I could run the screw right through the saddle and nut the end.

Thanks for your input. I was going to replace the bridge but may put more effort into locating 6 screws (or bolts).
