Dark Fire Headstock

Is the Gibson logo on the headstock a sticker, silkscreen design, or inlay?

What do you guys think of the flowerpot inlay? All I have seen are Gibson's PR shots, and after the A/AA/AAA/AAAA/AAAAA? top incident, I'm not sure I can trust those. After all, they are usually of the prototype and should not be used to base your purchase off of. Hmmm, that sounds familiar =D>

Does anyone have any pictures or opinions on it and the Gibson logo?

Thanks guys, I love the Gibson forums. They're like a big, happy, family. Well, except for the SG section. They "blacklisted" me after I asked about some concerns about the Angus Young SG, and how I heard it went out of tune easily. ;)

Oh well...

I like the headstock - its very nice.

Gibson is Mother of Pearl

Flowerpot inlay is right off a F5 Mandolin, and very nicely done.

The SG guys are too stuck on Angus and 1970 SG Standards, ( which if you ever took one apart you would see they are all routed for three pickups under the pick guard, the necks wiggle too much due to poor neck body joint and there's just too much plastic pick guard for my taste. But then I'm not keen on any SGs built after 1966.

I'm more into Derek Trucks tone, and structure of a 1961-1965 SG

The headstock inlay looks very real to me.

The concept of the Dark Fire is the Front side that faces the crowd is all top drawer stuff.

From the audience's perspective - the Dark Fire looks like a very spectacular and expensive guitar.

I get compliments on mine all the time, and when stage lights hit it, its amazing looking.

Yeah, good point.

As long as it sounds good, and looks good to the audience, who cares about the not-so-nice brown finish on the back. Who's really gonna see it?

I seriously can't wait for mine. The one at the GC distribution center that I ordered it from had apparently already been opened already, so they had to find it somewhere else, which increased the delay. I hope it gets here for my birthday...

Man, the top on yours is fantastic! I hope I get one that nice! :)

To get us completely off topic, what do you think of this:

My friend is looking to get one of those brown faded SG's at GC, but I'm keeping my eye out for something better...

Here's the story on that SG, if you're interested.:

Oh, and nice mid-air shot!

Skillz :)

I never was a PRS or Carvin fan,

Needless to say - I no longer lust after those.

Between my Dark Fire and my Gretsch , I have my fix for flame tops covered for a while :)

Unless I get a deal on a Mike Bloomfield LP ;)

BTW -

Now here is an SG!

1961

SG__0611.jpg

Observe the wood! - the pickups mounted directly on the wood in carefully routed cavities - like a Les Paul.

In 1961 these were known as Les Paul SG's

See how the pick guard is only on the side. And this year retains the 1957 era slant wrap around bridge - like Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow LP = sustain and tone.

The P90s are louder than PAFs. I can play Santana at Woodstock tone on this, the Who "Live at Leeds",

In 1969, my Family was transferred from Cupertino, CA to Ohio - I bought a 1966 Gibson ES330 for $200 in '69. - to replace a J.C. Penneys "Pencrest" guitar I got for Christmas in '67 at age 12

in late 1969 we moved to Chicago and my White '61 SG Special was obtained by my friend for $200 from a local Chicago Suburb Music store (Westmont, Ill.) , and we did an even trade in the parking lot.

Pre 1974 - you could buy used Fenders and Gibsons for $200-$400. Brand New Gibsons were $500 - thats what i paid for my tobacco sunburst LP Standard in '1974.

I own a 1961 Strat - I obtained in 1975 by trading a 1964 Gibson "joan Jett" type Melody Maker that I paid $60 for from my college room mate in 1974. i laminated a maple top to the melody maker and installed a pair of Gibson Humbuckers.

I miss my melody Maker - it actually sustained better than my '72 Les paul - but the LP had the "Les paul " mojo = i got gigs.

But after hearing Freeway Jam, and Robin Trower - I wanted a Strat w/ Whammy.

this was all pre Van Halen.

i saw Van Halen at Gazzarris on Sunset Strip in '76 - Eddie was playing an Ibanez Destroyer (explorer clone) no finger tapping - they were a great Aerosmith / Foghat cover band at the time.

My band would play the Starwood - opening for Quiet Riot ( with Randy Rhodes) when we were not touring AZ, TX,NM,CO,UT,NV. 1977-1979.

Then the band broke up and I got the gig as Service Manager at Valley Arts Guitar - to replace the departing Paul Rivera (Rivera Amps)

Don't know if you saw this yet, but it's an acoustic robot guitar:

http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Blogs/Dark-Fire--The-Inside-Story.aspx

Apparently, its a prototype Tronical has been working on. Looks... intriguing. Though, at this point and time, acoustic isn't really my thing. (I know that sounds closed-minded, but I started as a bass player. Picked up guitar for fun, as I found that bass by itself is a bit boring. Haven't felt the need to go acoustic yet...)

Not to be a pain/nag, but what do you think of that JayDee custom SG:

http://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk/angus_young_sg.html

I need an elantric seal of approval, before I recommend something like that to a friend. (It's his first guitar that's higher quality than an Epiphone, and he's determined to have an SG of some kind.)

:)

Thanks, and sorry if I'm off topic.

Wow, that is a nice acoustic!

I entered this contest, just for the hell of it:

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Contests/2009/kristofferson-giveaway/

But I think I'll ask for that acoustic some time, in the extremely likely chance that I don't win. Maybe I'll ask my dad...

Damn, now you got me thinking... But at least now I can temporarily get my mind off the Dark Fire, at least until it arrives.

What about something nicer than an Epiphone? Like Gibson range. He already owns an Epiphone SG, Peavy whatever, and Yamaha acoustic.

BTW, on a side, side note, what kind of neck is on the Epiphone SG?? It's so thin! I kind of like it... Is the Dark Fire neck like that, or is it thick?

That works perfectly, as there is one for sale at the local music shop... I think they want $1600, but I bet he could get it to $1300

Thanks.

As for the DF neck, is it thick/thin? I have never had a Gibson or Les Paul before, so the whole 50's/60's neck doesn't make any sense to me. All I have had is a Tele, for neck comparison...

All Dark Fires have an "asymmetrical" Neck Profile -

These appeared on Ernie Ball MusicMan Axis Guitars 15 years ago, and now Gibson adopted this for bulk of their standard production Les Pauls

It takes getting used too - but the treble side is 1/4 " thinner than the bass side. If you sliced the Headstock off and viewed down the length of the NEck - you would see an "Egg Shaped" profile.

All Dark Fires come this way standard.

You want an acoustic you can be proud of?

lust.jpg

Yes, I do, but at the same time, I'm already getting a Dark Fire. $200 I could probably justify with my dad. $2500, forget about it.

That does look like a fantastic guitar. Very nice indeed, but I'm not really an acoustic guy. They are more challenging to play, though, I'll give you that.

As for the asymmetrical neck profile, is it anything like my Supreme was, elantric?
