They had 9 hole relief though, these new ones don't. I have a 2003 light burst Classic in my collection which is an absolutely beautiful guitar, but I won't be trading it for one of these new models even though they look great. I don't think they were on the first ones.. The one Pip and myself have are slightly different as they are a LP Classic 1960 which have snot green inlays (which everyone moans about)... The only thing that does and always did bother me is that the waterslide decal says 'classic' and not 'model'. Btw, I don't think they took 1960 off the pick guard until around 2008. The one I saw was a 1990 - first year I believe - and I don't recall the inlays being green, they might have changed them a bit later on? Thing looked more like a genuine vintage LP guitar (well gigged) than any 'modern' releases I've seen since,and I'm not sure it was even trying to that much. Gibson Custom are definitely on another level, but these Gibson USA just became much closer to the RI than they were before. If you were planning on going R8, R9 or R0, and you can afford it, I’d suggest sticking with your original plan. My R0 just plays a bit smoother than the Standard 50s. I'll probably be able to resist, for a while. You know, the funny thing is that I cannot even rationalize why my R0 is slightly smoother to play then my Standard 50s. My Standard 50s is virtually perfect. Frets are perfectly done, neck is straight, nut has been slotted even better than my R0 when I first got it, everything on it is just, well, perfect. Yet for some reason, my R0 just plays marginally better and I don't know exactly why. I can't rationalize it. To be fair, my R0 has been played in, which in my experience should by default make it play better if properly maintained. To put it into perspective, it's like going from a Core PRS to a Private Stock. Maybe the R0 has a thinner lacquer, or maybe it's the played in feel of the R0, or maybe I still need to wait for the lacquer on my Standard 50 to fully cure in a couple of weeks/months, or maybe it's some fraction of a millimeter differences that I can't discern with a naked eye, but it is somewhat felt by touch.
