Jantha
If it were me, I'd go with the plain top: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Standard-Plain-Top?sku=517413
Tanner1994
You might be better off going to the epiphone forum... +1 sorry but it is true.
ninety1vee
haha this tanner kid cracks me up... anyway, the flame top is just prettier, thats all i agree w/ jantha, the plain top is the way to go and you can always swap p/ups out of the epi and upgrade it in numerous ways down the road for an amp, what's your price range? Dynadude
If I were looking at Epi Les Pauls, I would have to check out the Ultra 2 in faded cherry.

BTW: the difference i see is that its gold instead of silver for flametop isent gold a better receiver ? or was it just sprayed gold?
ChanMan
Not real gold. Gold will wear away and leave silver. Flame top/plain top is primarily a cosmetic thing, and not indicative of sound. Go play them and pick the one that sounds best to you. For $100, I'd look at the Line 6 Spider III amp.
