Everything else seems fine. (New Laptop & Student/Home MS Office)

Edge has replaced Explorer.

Internet Explorer is still there...  You just have to search for it 🙂

This is from an article written in 2015:

"Microsoft is sick of you not upgrading, and has a solution: Windows 10 will be the final “version” of Windows. Ever.

This is called Windows As A Service, and it’s a big deal. To understand what it means, think of Gmail or Facebook: longtime users know these services have changed over the years, but there aren’t “versions” of them. There’s no Facebook XP, or Gmail 7 – there’s just Facebook, and Gmail, both of which change over time.

Windows, apparently, is going to be like that. Microsoft’s Terry Myers explains:

And just like any Internet service, the idea of asking ‘What version are you on?’ will cease to make sense.“"

I did not know that Win10 will be the last version of Windows.

VLC Media Player seems to work wonderfully, and it is free.  ACDSee was great in it's day, but another picture program called FastStone, which is also free, is working wonderfully, and MUCH faster. Windows 10 still has some annoyances, but I can't remember any Micro$oft operating system that actually does everything they claim it does. But one of the main problems is developers who add so much  bloat to the system that it runs like a 386.

Want free? Google "Permanent Activator".

Thanks for the VLC Media Player tip, Tekboy. It's a very nice free program although, if I keep using it, I'll make a donation. I use FastStone and agree, it's also good.

Being a technician, I have no love for Micro$oft. In the end, if it is up to them, you will be paying a subscription for the operating system.

Its not about what it does better or not..  Its about the fact that support for Win 7 is totally stopping soon.

As it goes I don't mind Win 10.. I turned all the tracking rubbish off and it works well and will be supported with updates..  And actually I  got back about 250GB worth of disk space back with Windows 10..

No "support" for win 7? Like fixing security leaks in Win internet explorer? don't use it, Virus updates? Nope not that either,  Anyway boo freakin hoo. Linux is there and supported and I'll use Win 7 disconnected from the web for the VERY few things linux doesn't / can't do with Wine.

BTW, I have a 1TB drive  and have it 80% empty.

As a technician, what do you think of Linux? About 15 years ago, I set up a dual boot system - Windows/Linux. That was in the days of Red Hat and I didn't have the spare time to devote to really learning it. I've heard that Linux has become much more user friendly with a GUI. What do you think?

This thread got me thinking yesterday, so I downloaded a "LIVE" distribution of Trisquel Linux, which just runs from a DVD, and doesn't write anything to my actual system and storage drives unless I want it to. It will need some tweaking, as their are issues with the HDMI on the audio side. I could just hook speakers up to the audio interface, but then I wouldn't learn anything. Linux has come a very long way, but most of the good stuff costs money these days.

It isn't for everyone. But Windows is a trap, for people like me who like to actually think.

Linux appeals but has always appeared to be specialist. I'm not a techhead, nor used a CLI for 20 years. Will it run (for example) Photoshop without jumping through hoops?

I don't know yet, since I don't have that particular program. It runs VLC Media Player with no glitches so far. I believe some sort of photo manipulation software is probably native to the system.
