This thing is amazing.. Its the newest machine in the shop.. Electronic so measuring is totally accurate. But whats cool about this thicknesser is that it has a spiral cutting blade.. Most of these machines have single drum blades which means if you accidentally stick some metal through there (a big no no) and the metal chips the blade. With this machine rather than having to change the whole barrel you just change a single blade.. Very cool :)

And such nice wood it drives me a bit crazy.. All I see is guitar bodies everywhere :D

Today I had to work hard.. The idea was to give me some experience with the machines..

I started of with huge bits of wood...

Like this.. They were all very rough and some still had the bark on..

I then had to use the jointer to get two flat sides. And then the thicknesser and table saw to get them the right size

And then turn them in to battons with exact specifications (30x18mmm)

I did this all day and it was hard sweaty work but you know what.. I loved it :D

Well I have done ok so far.. But yes these machines are proper beasts and need total respect.. And not just a finger but you could loose a whole hand easy.. You also have to watch for kickback on the table saw and thicknesser.. Never stand directly behind it... If it happens apparently the wood can be ejected back at 110mph.

So.. Hopefully not … :)

Seriously lovely bits of kit and BEAUTIFUL slabs of wood!

Good to see things are on the upward path after all of the tribulations you endured recently. Best wishes for you.

Cheers man... And yeah I cant wait to get in there with some of my own projects.. Its actually quite exciting.. I mean I will still do a lot at my parents house but I will be able to knock up body and neck blanks with ease with these tools (some of them are like from the 50s, they really don't build them like that any more). Mostly what I hate doing with my tools and its not easy is getting stuff square and straight.. That's REALLY hard.. With the jointer and thicknesser I can do in minutes what would have taken me hours. AND I get all this amazing hardwood to choose from.

Some of it is called London Plane and was felled from the extension they are doing at Euston station.. Really nice stuff. When its quarter sawn it comes up as lacewood (the flecking patterning). Some of it is really really flamey.. I will be buying some :) And I can sell it as a London made guitar with London wood.. [thumbup] (we have proper certification from the FSC).

I'm glad for you Rabs, but I cant help but join the chorus on this one. Be careful.

I worked in a machine shop for 13 years. That bandsaw pic sent a shudder down my spine when I saw it. In my 30s I was using one like it to cut an odd shaped bit of aluminium extrusion. With one hand on the workpiece (to keep it from juddering - big mistake) and another using the push stick. The blade grabbed the workpiece and flipped it over causing a crush injury on one of my fingers. Compound fracture of the finger end. Couldnt play for about 10 months. I wasnt sure it I would ever play again for a while. I still have an odd shaped finger but I am so glad it works!

I remember when I worked.

The only thing you stopped working was the pole. Do you still have that up in your basement?

Oh oh, remember that day it was really cold and pole was even colder... reminded me of that scene in the movie Christmas Story!!! msp_lol.gifmsp_lol.gif

Oww…..

And thanks to you and everyone for your concern.. I am of course aware how dangerous these machines are.. I will do my best not to chop something off or worse

So what is your official title? I'm an Engineering Technician. Which is fancy for Maintenance Electrician, but we wont pay you what an electrician makes cause that is not your title.

Kind of cooly.. Its not really like that.. Im working with a one man business.. No company bullcrap.. Just two men working together... Not even a contract.. I do invoice him properly though (you gotta do that) which is going through my RabsWood business so im still my own boss as such. Actually he told me today that once I am up and running he wants me to be autonomous.

I guess if I had an official title it would be something to do with sales and marketing as its mainly going to be selling some stock on Ebay taking pics and stuff like that.. But I will do whatever.. Im not fussy :)
