The politicians pander to the largest group of voters, and when that group is made up of mostly worthless leeches, the system starts to eat itself alive. The few people who actually contribute to the national wealth cannot sustain the system, so it begins to lose money at an ever increasing rate. Sooner or later, it just crumbles. The few wealthy people left will abandon the country, and the rest are left to try to rebuild, which has never worked. They get comfortable with a meager existence, the status quo is comfortable. I'd rather live in a meritocracy where success is directionally proportional to the amount of effort put forth. I think I have a pretty good grasp on what you speak of. As a kid in the early seventies (when the BIG subsidies started) I watched a perfectly good field of wheat get plowed under. I thought the guy was NUTS! Maybe there was something wrong with the wheat? I walked over and asked him about it when he was done, he shook his head and told me this was the lowest-producing wheat field he had but it paid him more than any of the others when it was plowed under. Something VERY wrong with that, and politics is WAY too heavily involved. Now most farms are owned by huge multi-national corporations, so any integrity takes a back seat.
