GStrachan Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 Hi guys, I’ve just noticed some discolouration on my SJ-200. The inlay has always had this strange tinge to it since new but it suddenly seems to be spreading! Anybody ever seen anything like this before?
ratherbwalkn Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 I can't say anything about Gibson, but I had other brands do exactly the same and I always thought it was just the material ( some types of plastic ) beginning to age. IMHO
kidblast Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 what year is your J200? how much time does it spend in the case? at anytime did a strap or something come in contact with that spot and remain there for a bit?
Paul14 Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 My J-200 is about to turn 20yr old & the trim has started to yellow. Not exactly sure what’s going on with yours, but from the pictures, I kind of like it.
Lars68 Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 I also like the look of it. Can't help with what is causing it, though. Lars

It’s a 2006 model. I use it every couple of days and I’ve never had a strap on it. For cleaning I use the Gibson Pump Polish so nothing extraordinary there either.
Leonard McCoy Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Think back, something touched or was left on that spot for a longer period of time or that spot got exposed to the sun or other stuff.

'Couldn't see what you were talking about until reading some replies. . . So- it's in the mother of pearl of the logo ("inlay"), and in the binding? As Kidblast and Bones McCoy were wondering if you'd left a strap or something on there for a while, 'thought I'd post what happened when I left one of those super small, leave-it-on-the-headstock-and-forget-about-it D'Addario micro tuners on the Hummingbird Rosewood for a weekend: If the area on the binding bothered you, I suppose you could try compounding it off, exposing some fresh material with Virtuoso Cleaner, then the polish, if it's only on the surface.
Steve W Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 I think it looks fine! If that’s all that you’re concerned about with that guitar, your doing good! Enjoy it as it ages gracefully!
dhanners623 Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 I think it looks fine, or at least doesn't distract from the look of the guitar. Guitars age. And, yeah, don't leave anything (tuner, capo, etc.) clipped to your headstock. They'll screw up a nitro finish fast.
