Navy Vet. Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 I picked up a twenty year old Yamaha FG for 75.00 dollars. I bought it to take on a week long fly fishing trip and I will not not take my Gibson LG and leave it in a motel room unattended. So I get the guitar and replace the tuners with Grover Rotos and replace the nut with a spare bone blank. I string it up with 10’s and I’m amazed by the tone. Has anyone any experience with Yamaha FG’s? Can these guitars sound this good?
slimt Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Yup there decent guitars. I like the older solid top Yamaha guitars. There cheap to buy and very well made.
Dave F Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 I don’t know if it’s still true but at one time that was top seller in the world

This is a FG 413S SDB made in Taiwan. It has an unbelievable tone. This is the first Yamaha guitar I have played and I’m impressed.
sbpark Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 The YamahaFG Series has always had a reputation of being a killer value. They're VERY affordable guitars that are made well and are very consistent and sound pretty good. With that said, I don't think they are mind-blowing in how they sound, but they do sound really good, especially for what these can be had for, mores if you buy one used. Pennies on the dollar. I had a Yamaha FG441-S for many years. Bought it brand new around 1997. A few years ago the action started creeping up and couldn't justify a forking out for a neck reset so I just sold it for next to nothing to a guy who bought budget guitars for school music programs. I was really nice guitar.
kidblast Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 my very first acoustic was a Yamaha,, coulda been an FG series, It was many moons ago..

I defy anyone to find a better guitar for the price than a new FG 820. The original, made in Japan, red label FG's are highly collectible. My first REAL guitar was a 1971 FG140 Red Label. I stupidly traded it in on a brand new 1977 Gibson Hummingbird. That bird was a POS and is long gone but I searched for decades until I found something close to my original FG140 and I got a 1968 Yamaha FG150 red label for $130 on eBay about 18 years ago. I did a neck reset, refret and neck reshape myself, replaced the tuners, added a pickup, made a new bone nut and bone saddle and it is an awesome guitar. My wife calls it the "hippie guitar" because it has so much mojo in it. I currently have it in Nashville tuning.

My brother bought my nephew a used Red Label (40 years old) at a pawn shop about 5 years ago. I played it and I didn’t think much about it. It was badly out of tune and my son was driving me nuts that day so I didn’t bother to tune it. A few years later I gave my nephew a Breedlove. He was all excited, but he told me after playing it for a few weeks he thought the Yamaha was a better guitar. I said, ok, sure. Well it probably is. My brother picked that FG 140 up for 35.00. I’ve recently talked to a few of my friends who play acoustics exclusively. They told me my Yamaha has a solid top and my nephew has a all laminated guitar. They told me that I should try and trade mine for his. They said the Red Labels are the real deal. Mine they said is very nice, but not in the same league as a Red Label.
Navy Vet. Posted July 16, 2019 Author Posted July 16, 2019 How in the world do you post a picture on this sight? Reduce the photo to a postage stamp?

blindboygrunt Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 Imgur is great if you're using a PC or mac , for those of us who use a phone to browse the forum it seems impossible . I cant figure out how to post a picture

I cant figure out how to post a picture Ok. I'm giving this a try on my iPhone. I have the Imgur app. I've gone to my images, tapped on the image I want to post and touch and hold on the image to bring up a menu. Choose "Share" and then "email". This will paste the URL for the image into the body of the email. Copy that URL and paste it here... Okay. I had to cheat. This is the cheat. Do everything I said above but when you paste the URL into the text box here in the forum, you have to edit it a bit. This took me some trial and error. The URL I got from Imgur in my email body for the above image came out like this "http://imgur.com/gallery/abunchofcode" where "abunchofcode" was "kaADKBE". Every image will be different. Do these edits to the URL: 1. Add an "s" to the "http" so it says "https" 2. delete "/gallery" 3. add "i." in front of "imgur.com" 3. add ".jpg" to the end of the bunchofcode So the above example would end up looking like "https://i.imgur.com/abunchofcode.jpg" If you preview the posting with the preview icon just to the right of the "Size" option on the upper option bar of the posting window (fonts, bold, italic etc), you'll get a banner that says "Posted as rich text. Paste as plain text instead." If you touch that banner, it will insert the URL as you edited it and then you can hit "Submit Reply". That's how it worked for me.
