MorrisrownSal Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Anyone using Martin Retros on their mahogany back square? Mine is due for a string change, and I have the strings.... just wondering what the collective wisdom is.
nid2007 Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I like them on my rosewoods, and still prefer ej’s on my mahogany Gibson’s. I have a Tony Rice set on my J-50 now and am looking forward to getting PB’s back on it.
generaldreedle Posted July 27, 2019 Posted July 27, 2019 I know you said square but I put them on my Southern Jumbo and they sounded great
TomPhx Posted July 27, 2019 Posted July 27, 2019 I've been using Martin 80/20s on my Standard HBird, since switching from PBs last year. Haven't tried Retros on it, even though I do like them on several other mahogany backed guitars: D18, J-45. I'm happy with the sound of the Bird with 80/20s so haven't felt the urge to experiment further...
MorrisrownSal Posted July 28, 2019 Author Posted July 28, 2019 I put them on this evening... I played a little, and they sound good. lets see them settle in a bit. I bet I like them. I really liked D’Adarrio Nickel Bronze on my old Hummingbird Vintage, but it’s been a while.
dhanners623 Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Its not a square, but I string my J-35 with monels and really like the way they sound.
Lars68 Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Is that the type same as D'darrios nickel bronze? If so, I like them a lot. I put them on my old J-45, and it makes for a very, very, dry and crisp tone. Perfect for recording. Lars
