Stratocaster guy wanting to learn a little more... help?

Hey guys,

You heard it, I own an MIA Fender Deluxe HSS Stratocaster (olympic pearl/rosewood, for those who care) and a MIM Fender Standard Stratocaster. I am really curious about Gibson, as the different body styles and Jimmy Page played one. So what I am asking is something pretty big, but if someone with a way with words has time to tell, I have time to read and reply.

What makes each Gibson guitar so unique? By unique, I mean in comparison to a Fender Strat, or more specifically, my HSS Deluxe in the way each sounds and WHAT exactly they sound so unique in, what their zone is. The Les Paul, SG, Flying V, Firebird, and the others, what makes them so worth playing and buying?

I play blues and rock, like Hendrix and Page and am thinking about moving into some Batio/Malmsteen stuff, for the record.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

KRAD

Wow.

You sure opened a can of worms for a new guy....

:-)

First, it's this simple;

NO Strat is gonna sound like a Les Paul, I don't care what kind of humbuckers you put in it.

I'll skip the whole better/best thing and say only that the set neck DOES make a difference.

Lotsa Mahogany and Maple makes a difference.

If you can't hear it, don't pay for it.

If you do, your money will be well spent and retain it's value better than most guitars.

I like Fenders too, note the different pickups in mine....

Tele Deluxe humbuckers, Fender Dove P-90's, bone stock single coils, and the most honest guitar of all - an Ash Tele.

That's a lot of humbuckers. o_o

But what about the SG or Flying V or Firebird? Or do you think the Les Paul is just the best out of them all?

Well.. you've no doubt heard what Les Pauls, V's and SG's sound like.

This may seem obvious, but, I think you'll need to just get out and play them all and see what you think. They all have a very different feel than a Strat, and you'll either like it or you won't. I had a friend many years ago (Fender / Ibanez lover) that just HATED my Les Paul because of the weight and the fat neck... but to me, it felt like home.

That sounds like a good plan. To be honest, I need to get out of my safety zone and explore. If I were to get a Les Paul or some other cool Gibson, what would be the best 'starter', if I am willing to spend around 2 grand on one?

Only the Tele Deluxe's are humbuckers' date=' and very low output at that.

P-90's are single coils. Big, pissed-off single coils!

I love 'em.

But what about the SG or Flying V or Firebird? Or do you think the Les Paul is just the best out of them all?

SG is probably a little closer to your Strat with a hot humbucker in the bridge.

Explorer is a little bigger sounding.

Flying V is great for metal with hot pickups, good for lotsa stuff with mild pickups like the 57 Classic.

Firebird is a cool guitar, but sonicly it's not a real unique tone. Mini humbuckers can be thin and shrill, especially ceramics.

Get a new Les Paul Traditional.

Unbeatable.

If used guitars are okay with you, find a LP Standard from 2007 all the way back to whenever...

Most had a bigger neck than you're used to, it might become your preference.

I like the 60 Slim Taper neck myself.

Skip the "starter" baloney - there's a million great Les Pauls out there for $2k.

Don't buy a VOS, worn anything, faded this or that. It just gets too confusing.

Buy a good solid gloss finish Les Paul, and go from there. Later you can sell it for major $$$$ if it ain't you.

I had put 2 SD humbuckers on my American Deluxe Strat with

mahogany body/rosewood fret board. I expected this to sound

like a SG, but it didn't. Neo is right. No Fender will sound like a

Gibson. Not necessarily a bad thing, I guess.

Not bad, just different.

Each has its merit, and it's place firmly in music history.

Alright' date=' so if I narrow it down to SG or Les Paul, NeoConMan would choooseee...? I will guess LP due to your picture, but you can always surprise me. :']

SURPRISE!!!!

Get the LP.

If you love it enough to get bit by the Gibson bug, you'll suffer a lifetime of trying to buy everything they ever built...

SG is a good second Gibson, but I know guys who have a dozen Les Pauls - ALL great guitars, unique every one.
