Mercurine Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Apparently, most SGs are notorious for being neck heavy. Well, what do you guys here think? I'm of smaller build, so the lighter the better, and I was curious about the AY SG in particular. I'm thinking that's the one I might go for later once I'm able to purchase one, and thanks to those who filled me in on it!
Murph Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Do a search. There are many topics on this. Some are, some are not. Mine is, but I use a rough in leather strap, so, not so much a problem. They're worth it. Murph.
LPDEN Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I find different model SG's may exaggerate the issue more than others. But generally speaking, I find the SG to be a comfortable guitar to play.

NeoConMan Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 The SG is light enough, it's not really an issue. A rough-textured wide leather strap is enough to do the trick. A heavy guitar like the EDS-175 double neck is a different story. It's heavy as hell, cumbersome, and the leather strap simply takes your shirt with it as it slides over your shoulder. Makes my SG a joy to play....

NeoConMan Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I've found the heavier the SG = less neck dive. True, since the added mass would be on the right end. But I've never found much different in the weights of SG's, nothing like a LP or Strat. Have you?
SG dude Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 i skimmed over that thread quickly and i think i missed it but i'll say it anyway. someone (sorry, bad with names) said that with the a.y sig, the vibrola balances it out with the neck, so your just fine.

But I've never found much different in the weights of SG's, nothing like a LP or Strat. Have you?[/quote'] I have 1 '61 reissue that weighs in exactly at 7 lbs and another at 7lbs 14 ounces. The heavier one is all body weight and almost balances perfectly when wearing a strap.
NeoConMan Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I see. Yeah, my SG 61 has a Maestro, I'm sure it helps a little.
Boston004681 Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Mine is not. AT ALL!! i love it. i can dance on stage and it won't move.
Mercurine Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 Thanks everyone for the input; definitely clears things up. Obviously it depends greatly upon the type of sg. Thanks!
gateway Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I would strongly advise anybody to put the guitar on a strap before you decide to buy any Gibson sg. In my opinion it does make a difference. Get a neck heavy guitar and a tiny portion of your fretting hand is occupied in lifting the neck. I found a cunning solution involving lead shot but frankly it was ridiculous! Edit:(Hmmm.... the censorship of the last word is a bit odd?)
Simonphilipps Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I've got the AY SG, and it's the most comfortable guitar I've ever played! How do you think Angus can jump and run all the time? I also think it's very well balanced, having a very slim neck and a maestro tremolo on the other side! :D/
