Need a little help on this J-45 acoustic.  Headstock logo dot is kind of large and the placement?  Also the soundhole rosette seems different from what I've normally seen...finally the double bound body and bound fretboard?  Any conclusions, if legit what year range?  Informed replies appreciated

Thanks,

John

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m 99% certain its fake. The 3 screw truss rod cover is supposed to be a two screw, the headstock logo placement is off, and of course like you mentioned its not supposed to have a bound fretboard. There’s more issues too but I believe thats enough to know its a fake

Hate to admit it, but I totally missed the three screws!  I was too focused on the fretboard I guess.  I hadn't bought it, but was considering it.  Thanks so much TheLeadFlatpick for opening my eyes a little wider.

A J-45 can't always be automatically thought of as a fake because it has 3 truss rod screws. During Gibson's Norlin era, 3 was the norm:

The other things mentioned in the above post are red flags, as well as the possible East INDIAN rosewood back/sides, oversized body binding, weird look to the heel, and fat, poorly finished frets also look questionable. 1 9/16" nut?

Keep looking. You'll find a nice one.

Correct, but I don’t think gibson ever made a sloped shoulder J45 with a 3 screw truss rod cover. Nevertheless, yeah I mean its always possible someone replaced the 2 screw truss rod cover with a three screw one, you would just have to remove the cover and see if there’s another hole there for a 2 screw cover, which would be another way to tell if its a fake.
