Need Help With 67 SG Reissue Setup

Recommended Posts

I received my new Gibson 67 SG Reissue with P90 pups and the strings are resting on the pole pieces to the front pup. I have never tried adjusting this type of pup and would appreciate any advice/instructions any of you could provide. It would cost me $45 to have a local tech do the setup and since this is the only problem, I'd rather take care of it myself.

Thanks

The six flat-head screws are obviously your pole pieces. There are also two phillips-head screws (one between the A and D strings and another between the G and B strings) and these are for adjusting the pickup height.

How far should I lower it? What should the distance from the pole to the string be?

Here's a pretty informative link...

To at least get in the ballpark, fret your high and low E strings at the highest fret. The pole pieces should be between 3/16" and 1/4" from the strings. As a rough guide, the plug on a guitar cable is 1/4" so you can slip it between the string and the pole piece to get an idea.

BTW, when I went downstairs to check my '67 Special, the bridge pickup almost touches the strings when I fret them at the top fret.

In case anyone is interested, I got the correct specs from Gibson:

Neck P90: 3/32" at both high and low E strings when held down at 22nd fret.

Bridge P90: 1/16" at both high and low E strings when held down at 22nd pret.

The adjustment screws are small. I had to buy a new screwdriver to adjust them and wanted to get the correct size, but the tech at Gibson couldn't tell me what size to get. He suggested I check out Stewart McDonald (stewmac.com). They carry tools and other things for instruments. They sell a Guitar Tech Screwdriver Set that has Phillips heads in sizes 000, 00, 0 and 1 plus flat tips and Alen tips for $24.95. I only needed the Phillips screwdrivers so I looked around online to see if I could find a set of just those kind and at Home Depot they sell a Husky 8-in-1 Precision Screwdriver set for $5.97 that has the Phillps in 000, 00, 0 and 1 (the #1 size is what I needed for the adjustment screws), and it also includes flat tips in sizes 1/16", 5/64" , 3/32", and 1/8".
