Dave F Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 How can we identify what guitar you have with no pictures or information?
62burst Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 Isn’t a ‘46 one of the more easily identifiable years, because most did not have the banner, but they still had the headstock script logo, and almost never had any FON (factory ordered number) stamped on the neck block inside the guitar. You have nothing stamped on your guitar’s neck block? If it doesn’t look like it’s going to turn out to be a ‘46, then hopefully a neck block stamp will allow it to be narrowed down a little better with other guitars on the Gibson Banner Registry. yeah, photos would help. And imgur is what most people use to embed photos here.
zombywoof Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 It is not uncommon to run into 1945, 1946 and 1947 Gibsons without FONS. If it has a Banner and no FON you can assume it dates to 1945, As general rule of thumb if it has a script logo but no Banner and a 1 3/4" nut chances are it was made in 1946. I believe the etiquette though is to refer to the non-FON script logo guitars as 1946/47 as more thna likely there will be some early 1947 guitars out there which match the '46 specs. The tuners may also help date a guitar depending on whether they are single, double or waffle rivet Klusons. But without photos nobody is going to be able to offer much in the way of guidance. Here is the headstock on a '46 I owned for many years. This one has double rivet Kluson tuners.
EuroAussie Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 If its got no truss rod like mine, you can be sure its 1943.

Thanks for the info, wasnt aware of that. JT, out of curiosity, how are the non-truss rod banners perceived in terms of construction, overall quality ?

In truth, because Gibson did not record the FONs of shipped guitars in the shipping ledgers, dating Banners, or any vintage Gibson without a serial numbers (only awarded to high-end flattops like the Nick Lucas and to archtops) is guesswork. I love the truss rod-less Banners! They are lighter and a bit more resonant, I think. Here's the video I also posted in Dan's "Powder, 2 guitars, and a trailer" thread of Dan and me playing my two truss rod-less Banner SJs:
