modar
I ordered a scratch and dent gibson special and it arrived today. I was looking it over and starting at the nut the paint has a thin crack line about 2" long that run just below the fret board on eachside of the neck. it dont look like it's been repaired I guess it's possible something could have happend before the paint was dry. I expected some scratches but this I dont know. just blemish or bad neck???

80LPC
Yes, sadly it's cracked . But it can be repaired, and we've seen a lot worse...
modar
maybe I should send it back and go with a full priced sg special. it plays and sound great but man it's a little too sratched and dented.
80LPC
Good idea to return it. And look after your new one - those necks are not strong in that area.
jimmiJAMM
Dude, there's some really inexpensive SG's out there if you're patient, persistent and a bit-o-luck helps too. Search eBay & Craigslist. You'll find a sweet "unbroken" one out there somewhere.

nynvolt
That wasn't a scratch and dent as they define it, that was cracked. Scratch and dents are supposed to be minor finish blemishes or returns not broken instruments. Good that you returned it.

heymisterk
Definitely a crack. Shame on Gibson. That's the kind of stuff that the anti-Gibson folks pick up on and rail about.
max2343
Dude I don't think Gibson sell's 2nd's or Scratch and Dent's. Dealers do. Mostly of the big Mail order Box'em and Ship-em Companies. And they get those from returns on a "30 day trail" That one never left Gibsons Factory that way. That one was Damaged by someone by Shipping or Misuse or Neglect
nynvolt
^ exactly. Nothing wrong with scratch and dents however I don't see the prices being that much better really though.
Geff
There are some things I would be happy to buy scratch and dent or better still "B" stock. But a scratch and dent guitar should be priced same as a used guitar and they generally are not that significantly reduced. Also, lets be honest, we are among friends here, a lot of Gibson's output should be called scratch and dent or second as it leaves the factory. They might not sell seconds but they do sell guitars that should be seconds. That is why almost everyone agrees you need to try out a few before buying "the one". The quality is that inconsistent. This sounds like the shop's fault though as that guitar should never have been sold as anything but a project.
