Classic Custom

Hi All, I'm new here. Just wanted to say hi and ask if anyone else has one of these? What the general opinion is? The reason for asking is i've never seen another one and never heard any body mention it.It's a 2008 classic custom w/ 57+ in the bridge and 57 classic in the neck. Just curious.

Welcome to the forum.

Really lovely guitar.

I've been trying to track one down myself to see how it sounds/plays. As it's been discontinued for a while it's not as easy as it sounds!

The nearest I've found is one of the 'GOTW', No. 28(?) which is effectively yours with a pair of black P-90's.

I recall seeing pictures of one but that's about it. I just did some Googling to see if I could find any for sale and' date=' nope, nothing that I could find.

Very nice looking LP!

I don't know whether or not it was made in a limited production number. There's a White Classic Custom for sale in England at the moment but, just like RichCI says, I can't find any black ones.

The GOTW I mentioned was limited to 400 world-wide, BTW.

Am I correct in assuming it has an Ebony Fingerboard?

I was playing my brother's '78 Ibanez Artist at the weekend. His guitar has an Ebony 'board and it was the first time I really enjoyed the feel, hence my interest in this instrument.

Yup, it's an ebony fret board and it does sound pretty good. I was just curious about it becase there is very little info out there about it. It's almost like i didn't happen(LOL), I can't even find info on it on the Gibson website.

The only difference between yours and mine is the ebony fret board, the finish and possibly the neck profile. Mine is also a GOW with a 60's profile neck. Love it. Best guitar I've ever had. Even better than the Gold Top Deluxe I sold many moons ago. See avatar.

The ad copy on the Gibson site says "single binding," what they mean is there's binding on the top but not on the back. Where there is binding (body and headstock) it's multiply (single ply on the neck). There's a Guitarworld magazine video review of the guitar on youtube. Yes it's an ebony fingerboard, and from prior inquiries I made here people replied that the inlays are white (not green like other Classics). They were introduced at the Jan 2007 NAMM show and discontinued mid 2008. I seem to recall one or two retailers still had them in online listings as of a month or two ago. Barrel "speed" knobs instead of tophat/witch-hat. Uncovered '57 Classic/'57 Classic Plus pickups with not only gold polepiece screws but also gold plated slugs on the other coil. Gloss black with antiqued/yellowed binding. Holly/flower/crown headstock inlay (so there's no "Les Paul MODEL" decal like a standard, and there's no double-diamond inlay like a Custom). Gold plated trussrod cover says "Les Paul." Gold plated tulip tuning keys. Gibson USA case. Nashville bridge. Since it's part of the Classic line it would have a slim-taper neck.

I wanted one but never saw one in person to play before pulling the trigger.

Thanks for all that, bobv.; very informative.

I hadn't spotted the gilt slugs!

I'm going to try to get into town on Friday to see if the one I mentioned is still on the wall. From memory it wasn't cheap (for a Classic) at around $3,000. In fact a regular LP Custom is only about $ 500 more, but I prefer all the inlays, markers, open bobbins and aged binding on the Classic.

Yes; I know I'm a Heathen........

What price were/are they Stateside?

I love my Classic Custom, though it's a GOTW. I've seen a number of the original classic customs and the GOTW versions at various stores here in Canada. I paid about $2500.

$500 below a custom is generally the case for new. Sometimes its less.

You should be able to get them down a bunch on the price...

I'd have to guess the minimum advertised price Stateside (because it's the number that consistently shows up in the online ads) for the Standard is $2,489 and the Classic Custom was advertised at $2,549 USD. Don't know what individual dealers were willing to let them go for, and it probably wouldn't be fair to post the bargain numbers on the net so you probably won't find any specifics about what people actually paid.
