ndavis1971
It was a long and winding road but finally pulled the trigger on a 1933 l00 from thunder road guitars in Portland. It is half a pound lighter than the Kroydon and with a truss rod. Guess everything happens for a reason. After bidding on the Kroydon and shipping prep, they informed me it would take 3-4 weeks to ship from Canada due to CITES and if I wanted to return it then it’d be the same pain with paperwork. So ultimately we decided it was best to pass. Anyhow thanks for all your help. I’ll have a 48 hour inspection period. The repairs were done by Carters apparently. Pretty minor. Finger brace replaced and small cleat for small crack just under finger board. https://www.gbase.com/gear/gibson-12-fret-l-00-1932-black-w-white-pickguard Edited September 26, 2019 by ndavis1971
Jinder
That is GORGEOUS. I played a near identical 12 fret Tux L-00 from '33/'34 recently and it was exquisite. I think you'll be immensely happy with this one. Congrats!
BluesKing777
Congratulations! Looks great! Now that you bought one, were you previously looking at these 2 at Folkways? They certainly do a good write up! I better drag out the Waterloos at lunchtime.....😳 http://www.folkwaymusic.com/vintage-instruments/gibson-guitars/1932-gibson-l0-0719/ http://www.folkwaymusic.com/vintage-instruments/gibson-guitars/1930-kel-kroydon-kk1-0919/ BluesKing777. ndavis1971
Why did you have to post those links?!?! Actually I called on the L0. It has a mahogany top and was described as kind of trebly. I wanted a cedar top. The Kroydon looks beautiful. But some members warned about their noodle necks and lightness being prone to issues. Also still have the same CITES issue with Brazilian fretboard. If it’s not up to par, good luck sending it back. It sucks both ways to and fro Canada. In the end, I just felt more comfortable with the Gibson name on the headstock and a truss rod. Plus I have a 1936 14 fret l00 burst and this will compliment it looks and sound wise. BluesKing777
You have no idea of drama! I live in southern Australia. I use to be constrained by price and delivery cost and customs cost and bank costs, but now I can't have anything with rosewood and a whole list of items without giving them both nipples as deposit for the larger item due on arrival.😵 If it isn't for sale here, now, it ain't happening. Someone give the Gibson people a bit of a shake and reissue some of these 30's 12 fretters with exportable material like walnut, maple... Back to my Waterloos..... (less trouble anyway). This one is maple 12 fretter: https://guitarfactory.net/collections/waterloo/products/waterloo-wl-12-jb-jet-black BluesKing777. Jinder
I think if you're tempted by a Kroyden but worried about issues with an original one, you could do worse than try one of the recent Waterloo Kroyden-based models. I played one recently that my guitar dealer chum Glenn Sinnock has for sale and it left me massively impressed. Not a guitar that suits my writing/playing style particularly, but within its field it was utterly superb. Incredibly lightly built and responsive but felt solid enough to last a lifetime.
uncle fester
Nice guitar, congrats! I think I can just barely see BK's reflection in the front...
bobouz
I've been to ThunderRoad Guitars in Portland (there's one in Seattle, too), and sold Will a guitar last year. I'm guessing you'll be happy with your new L-00. Congrats!

Thanks pal. They had the Kroydon for less than 24 hours before I nabbed it. It’s the perfect one. 2.5 lbs with the thicker neck. So now I have the 12 fret l00 tuxedo and this. Look for one guitar and end up with two. I owe King Blues lunch !!! Signed, Broke but Happy Edited September 28, 2019 by ndavis1971

Signed, Broke but Happy Very, very nice! You don’t need to buy me lunch and besides I could possibly be too green with envy to eat it. On the tech front, the Waterloo copy has advice to use only maximum strings of 11s in standard tuning. I suppose the Kel could be the same? You need to check! It could all pop. BluesKing777. zombywoof
Congrats. Glad to see the dust has finally settled. The L-00 250 batch number indicates 1932. FON 298 was the first 14 fretter. Sounds like the Kroyden may be a winner. May take some time to get used to the shallow C neck profile but you will not have to worry about rubbery necks. BluesKing777
Waterloo WL-K From the Waterloo site: Due to this model's ultra-lightweight construction, we recommend a maximum string gauge of .011" to .052". Hardshell TKL case included. Will the Kel be needed to be treated the same? BluesKing777.
ndavis1971
Thanks for the Gibson l00 info zomby. I was curious to know that. The Kroydon of that year actually has a neck comparable to 50s Gibsons. That’s one reason I bought it. Based on your advice I didn’t want the thin spaghetti necks. No bowing on this neck. It’s the most desirable year for them Yes blues guitar 11 strings max. Edited September 29, 2019 by ndavis1971
Jinder
Wonderful stuff, the Tux L-00 AND the Kel!! That is an absolute dream team. Enjoy...and please give us a full report after they land!!
zombywoof
There has got to be a lesson to be learned in all of this. It was only the fates that intervened on your behalf regarding the first Kel Kroyden you gad decided on. It had nothing to do with the guitar that kept it out of your hands but that it had become a royal pain in the butt to get it. If you had known then what you now know, ow you would have proceeded on that first guitar with a whole lot more caution than you did or possibly even dismissed it out of hand. You are luckier than I was as back when I started snagging these kinds of guitars it was pretty much a buy first and ask arising questions later as the only way those questions got raised was to have the guitar in your sweaty little hands. Me, I was a slow learner.
