What is your most versatile guitar. (And why)

BTW....anyone heard from forum member Versatile?

Hasn't posted in awhile, Versatile......

A versatile guitar should be useable for pick playing, finger/thumb picking, slide, rhythm chops and more,  in a variety of styles.  My acoustic guitar does all that!

But electrics....I don't tap so haven't thought about that or dive-bomb trem stuff.  And I don't use a capo.

My semis feed back at loud volumes, so - much as I love 'em - they're out.  I can't play slide on my LP Custom, it's just not suitable.

Which leaves solid-bodies; Strat, Tele and/or my nice Gibson L4S.   The Strat always sounds like a Strat whatever music you play so for me it's the Tele and the L4S.

I finger/thumb pick on all of them, I don't particularly care which one it is.  I figure I should be able to do those things on all of them.

I play slide on any one of them at any time.  I don't re-tune, and I don't set them up for slide.  i resent playing slide, but I do it.  It is hard.   i'm like Dickey, if I have to I will, but I'd rather not, except sometimes third set after a couple good belts I might want to.  Maybe.  Like for some Skynyrd or something, just do do it.

I tap now and again, mostly for looks.  I don't care which one I'm using.  I rarely put the bar on the strats, but I'll Halen/Hendrix the crap out of it when I do, I don't care.

I have one semi currently, I've had a few, they all feed back like monsters if I'm back too close to the amp but I go with it and own it.  It's fun!

I have wondered why ES-330 and Casino sound very different to me being of similar designs. But possibly because the ES-330 has a center block and the Casino is a true hollow body giving it a unique sound that is to die for. The Casino's "P90 Classic pickups" are slightly more microphonic and brighter than "Epi's P90 Pro's", giving the Casino the ability to transmit more of the acoustic sound from the chamber.... anyway I like both guitars but they are every different... 🙂

My ES-330 is fully hollow like my Casino but with higher fret access.

Acoustically the 330 sounds fuller, but that's probably because it has nitro lacquer while the Casino has a poly finish.

Amped, the Casino sounds brighter. It could be because the pickup poles are closer to the strings or the difference between 1969 P90s and 2002 P90s. I read somewhere that back then they underwound the P90s for the 330 to minimize feedback - but I don't know if that is true or not as it was on a forum with no documentation to back it up.

The ES-330 has higher fret access, but I doubt that has anything to do with tone.

The ES-335 has a center block of wood and humbucker pickups - an entirely different sounding guitar.

The ES 330 has a Different Neck Set also. It seems more like an ES335 but with P90's.

My recent Casino's have Gibson USA P90's, Switcraft etc. They're really versatile great Guitars. They rival all my Guitars including my Gibson LP's, Firebird V & ES335.. Although they're really great too..

Funny thing with all the guitars I have  I seem to use my Epiphone Casino in many different musical situations.

Its great acousticly as I can sit with a group of friends and play and sing.

It has a great clean tone through any amp I have, and no matter what pickup combination I use.

It growls really nice when overdrive is added to the amp.

The only restriction is the upper fret access.

What year and country of origin, Duane?

I find my Korean Epiphone Sorrento fits that description.  I was recently recording something with the Telecaster Thinline and decided to to try the Sorrento too. I thought, "I wonder how this will turn out?" Turned out pretty good. It was louder, harder, meaner and had a rounder, fuller tone to it.

Still, for my overall choice, it's my ES-175 for most of everything.  I know I own a lot of telecasters, but the ES-175 allows me to play acoustically too. And the neck on that guitar is perfect for my hands.

As much as I love my Les Pauls and Flying V's, probably my most versatile guitar is my Ibanez Jiva, the Nita Strauss signature guitar. The three pickups, Humbucker, single, Humbucker with 5 way switch allows me to split the humbuckers and get a nice Strat style quack. The pickups aren't as hot as what you'd think they are and backing off the volume gets a fairly clean/crunch kind of tone. Combine that with 24 frets and a Floyd Rose style whammy, there's not much that guitar can't do. This is my guitar she's playing in this picture. She (Nita Strauss) couldn't get to her guitar so I offered up mine for her to play.

My favorite live guitars, however, are my Les Paul Goldtop with P90's and my Les Paul Traditional. I simply know what they're going to give me and what I can get out of them and we play a wide variety of music from classic rock, hard rock, metal, blues, country and whatever else my band wants to do.  One of those are usually on the stage with me. I recently got a Schecter CR-6 and it's pretty versatile as well.

I was about to say that I only have 3 guitars and two of them are Les Pauls so there's not much to choose from. But then I remembered my recent PRS acquisition. PRS are known for their multiple tone options, but mine only has 2 humbuckers and a three way switch. No coil splitting or push/pull options. Other than the shape it's pretty much a Les Paul.

So that leaves my Kokocaster. Basically a clone of Charvel Surfcaster. Has a  split humbucker at bridge and lipstick single coil at neck. And it's semi-hollow. I guess those features would make it more versatile than the others.

Having said that, I'm still most comfortable playing gigs with my Les Pauls. I think it's to do with their necks.

it’s a 2007 JL Revolution.....  I believe the husk was shipped from japan, then assembled in Memphis.

I have to agree.  The word "versatile" has to have limits of some kind.  I think a guitar that does the things I need it to do is "versatile" enough for me, because I'll make it do what I want.

If you ask me to do the banjo in Theme From Deliverance well, I don't have a guitar for that so no, I'm not very versatile.

I guess I don't ask my guitars and amps and pedals to do anything I don't do, so in lots of eyes I'm "limited".  I'm not.  I get paid for this, not that, that's why I can't/don't do that, I do this.

yeesh that took too many words.

i agree with rct, im not versatil either haha...so i thought about it a lot and i think i would have to go with my St Vincent signature

I have Electric Fenders, Gretsch, Epi's, Gibsons & Ric's. Mini HB's, various HB's, various SC's &  P90's.

I agree of all my Guitars my Casinos are the most versatile.. They seem to do everything well & with just about any Amp..

Yes, Same here...I have Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, Etc, and my Casino is my guitar to go to now since I bought it last year. I play mostly on my Fender Super Champ X2 but have a Mustang 2 amp also.  I love those P-90's and wish I would have bout the Casino way back. I have Rob, or Digger for those that don't know him to thank for talking me into buying my Casino Coupe.

My customized 2014 SG would be my most versatile I guess. It was a Stratosphere guitar, so I just bought the stripped out body and built it to my own preferences from there. After my 4th set of pickups, I'm finally happy with it. I built the wiring harness with push/pull pots. The bridge pickup is split the standard way with the slug coils active when split. The neck pickup is split with the screw coils active when split for more of a Tele sound. I've never managed to keep a Les Paul in my collection for more than 6 months because I love this SG so much, and it makes the same noises plus some...

I'd say my 356 is the most versatile.  It can go from jazzy on the neck pickup, to very Les Paul like in any position, and with the center block feedback is not a problem.  It can be pretty twangy on the bridge pickup, but would never be mistaken for a Tele.  My 2017 LP Standard comes in a close second for versatility, with Burstbucker Pros, coil split, and phase reversal.

I think versatility is probably more a function of the player and not the guitar.  The last thing my band did was record a CD and I used two different acoustics, two different LPs, the 356, and my Strat.  But when you listen to the CD you probably couldn't tell which guitar I was using as my tone and attack are a function of how I play.

356 on the left, LP Standard on the right.  The one in the middle ain't so versatile, but it's a lot of fun to play.

Good to see you Ranger.  We had a great rut trip out to Mammoth September/October.  Wondering where you be of late, so nice to see you again.

I transferred to New Mexico recently. Still in the same general area, just a bit further south.

I'm pretty much all acoustic for quite some time. I still own a 91 Tele and a 79 SG and a Les Paul Studio and a few amps, but this is my "hoss". 2003 J-45 Rosewood w/ebony board/bridge.
