I think its a nice thing to have if you spend a lot of time up that part of the fretboard widdling... Not essential I don't think though. In the end I don't think its either here nor there.. When I first saw them I thought that maybe it might make a slightly weaker neck joint but I have never heard a single complaint about it so I am sure that's actually not an issue, its not an unusual feature to find these days...
