onewilyfool
I think these guys can only operate in an environment like EBAY or on line selling...now I know why they call it "EVIL-Bay" I have never personally used EBAY, but with all the fake Les Pauls, and now Fake Acoustics......I think we better stick to the local sellers. Ebay is just not worth it to me....I've heard too many horror stories....
J-200 Koa
The eBay auction you refer to is legitimate. I have bought from him and he is a stand-up seller. Rather than accuse someone of something illegal, why not simply ask them or one of their customers first. He has a perfect eBay history and I'm sure he will respond if you just ask. rar
TAKE A LOOK AT THE PAGE BELOW http://www.dhgate.com/... You will find several custom gibsons ranging from 250 to 550$. Hmmm. A company in Beijing that says it is "an online business platform where you can purchase directly from China" is selling what purport to be Gibsons at ridiculously low prices' date=' and these turn out to be counterfeit? To paraphrase Captain Louis Renault, I'm shocked, [i']shocked[/i], to find that counterfeiting is going on over there! :) I have some sympathy for the victims of these people, but only about the same amount as I have for people who buy genuine Rolex watches from guys on the street in NYC for $100. Buying from eBay, OTOH, is a straightforward gamble. Sometimes you win, but there are no guarantees. Sure, the more you know, the better your chances of winning. If you're careful and knowledgeable, the odds are often very much in your favor. What more can you ask? I've bought plenty of stuff from eBay. No guitars, tho'. As I've said before, buying an acoustic guitar without getting to play it first seems pretty crazy to me. -- Bob R
guitarstrummer
I'm not sure about the seller in your first link, but the seller in the second (E-bay) link has been operating for some time and Gibson is aware of it. That guy has to either be a Gibson dealer using a different name or someone with direct ties to a Gibson dealer who is liquidating guitars on E-bay for the dealer so that the dealer can show increased sales. Gibson dealers are not permitted to sell on E-bay and this is a way that they're trying to get around the Gibson rules that all dealers are required to follow. This only makes it hard for the legitimate dealers to make sales when they try to play by the rules.
EddieDean
Ditto Guitarstrummer, the second link is legit. I bought my H'Bird TV from him and it has been authenticated by Bozeman. It's a beautiful guitar. Any buyers need to keep in mind that Gibson considers these auctions as USED sales, even though the guitars are new. There IS NO Warranty!!! If you browse through the dhgate site you will find the exact same guitar, and pictures. And yes it might be an OK guitar, but I do not believe it is a "real gibson". TommyK
They chased this guy... or someone like him.... out of the old board for gratuitous posting of pics with links to his Chinese made 'Gibsons'. Notice where these come from Qingdao China... What else comes from that neck of the woods.? These people have no shame.

brians356
But are the guitars any good? Seriously, what if your ears can't tell the difference? Or your hands? (When you buy a fake Rolex for $20, you don't expect it to actually keep time or even run for long. But if it worked just as well as a Rolex, would you pay $20 for one?) Just food for thought, I'm not saying fake Gibsons are a good thing, or encouraging someone to buy one. I'm just curious, are they junk or are they decent guitars? Are they maybe better than some of the Gibsons made in the Dark Time?

j45nick
For some reason, both of these eBay links come up dead for me. The second link gets the eBay "listing removed" post, and for the first, I just get the IE "website not found" response. The bottom line is that you really need to know what you are looking at on eBay--or anywhere else, for that matter. In the last year, I've bought two very nice, properly-represented guitars from individual sellers via eBay. I've also bought one other that was both overpriced and improperly represented from an online home-operated dealer who shall remain nameless, but whose guitars always seem to be priced too high for what they are. I also bought one very nice 70s Ess and Ess Gibson case, but it got damaged in shipping. None of the guitars I have bought were damaged in shipping, but it's luck of the draw. That's a risk you don't have to take in buying from a local dealer, or even one of the big (or small) online guitar specialists that operates a bricks-and-mortar store. Forgot to mention that I also bought a very nice Martin on Craigslist, but it was only 1 1/2 hours drive away, so I picked that one up in person. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Fakes are getting awfully good, and in some cases can even fool "experts" until you can examine them closely first-hand. Don't expect to buy a real J200 from a guy in China for 25 cents on the dollar. Come on, guys! A lot of postings on this forum (and on the Gibson Custom forum) revolve around guitars that are believed to be fake. In most cases, it's easy to tell, but not always. The real difficulty on eBay is buying legitimate vintage guitars that are sold "as-is". It is almost impossible to tell from a photo if a vintage guitar needs a neck re-set, which will add $400-600 in most cases. Having a working truss rod is not a substitute for a proper neck angle. Two of my vintage Gibsons are having neck re-sets by Ross Teigen right now, because I buy vintage guitars as players, not as things to look at. When buying vintage on eBay, I will not bid more than $400 BELOW what I think the guitar is worth if the neck is right, since I have no way of knowing. A lot of people don't realize this issue, and the prices get bid up without taking that into consideration. I'm neither a dealer nor a music professional. I'm just a hobbyist who happens to love playing vintage Gibsons (and doesn't mind some of those guitars from the builder whose name starts with "M"). StLucifer
You know buddy, I hear of these Chinese remakes of Gibson Les Paul Customs and SJ200's quite frequently. There are definitely ways to tell if they are counterfeit or not. Bottom line being, a buyer should not have to beware of counterfeit anything on eBay or any other large name buy & sell outfit like that. If and when you purchase a Gibson guitar, regardless of the price you have paid, you should definitely not have to worry about wether it's authentic or not. eBay is a huge business and must honour what they do say. If you get your new to you 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty", or WTF, you have 30 days to return it. I truly believe that if the item is not authentic, or exactly what it is supposed to be, the buyer should get ALL funds paid back and not be out 2 cents. It's only fair. Check out the counterfeit list of what to look for in counterfeit Gibsons or whatever it is you're purchasing on the internet. I cannot believe the crap I see and have seen on the internet...E.G. a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty for $800 with original case. Not happening in a real life situation. It'd be almost like waking up beside Beyonce...you best just go back asleep and wake up again. You said there must be something that can be done to stop this, or deter this...nothing short of a crime and/or a sin. Just be extra careful in purchasing anything on the net. StLucifer
I've seen some dandies on the net. Check out counterfeit Gibsons on You Tube. You'll find some amazing but true stories of deception regarding fake Gibsons, Martins & Fenders. The job that some of these counterfeit guitar makers do is incredible for sure. If you didn't know, you could get fooled easy enough. Apparently, some of these counterfeits are done very, very well. I've found that if it's too good to be true, it probably ain't true. Check it out, and BUYER BEWARE.
