Nitro/Stand Problems?

My '03 J45-RW has lived it's life on a cheap stand, or hanging on the wall the last 3 or 4 years on a MF wall hanger thing. I'm looking at it hanging there now.

It's looking back at me.............

Hold on.

I need a beer.......

I'll be back.........

Murph.

Okay. I'm back.

Everything looks okay..............

I read about what a mean guitar owner I am.

I'm not....................

I swear..............

Hold on, I'll be right back......

Not exactly sure what's goin' down here, but it does cause me to remember a time I visited a Gibson retailer and asked to sample a couple of guitars that were hanging in a glass case.

When the chap handed me the guitars both had pretty serious burn marks where the nitro had reacted with whatever was in the hangers.

Not a pretty sight.

So when I eventually got to own a Gibson I made sure the neck was making contact with a nice piece of cotton.

Don't hang your nitro guitar on anything that looks like orange tubing. Use a Hercules or equivalent stand that won't react with the nitro. Also watch out for vinyl guitar straps... you'll regret it if you use them!

I've been using relatively cheap floor stands that have a rubber compound which the guitar rests against about half way up the back of the guitsar.

I've noticed marks appearing on a couple of my guitars where the rubber seems to create a dull spot on the nitro cellulose. To stop this I've tied the Gibson cleaning cloths over the rubber and the problem has been solved. Lucky for me I noticed the problem early before the marks were too bad.

I've also had dye from my shirts run into the back of two of my guitars. It happens when the venue is hot and I sweat. Not sure what I can do about it, other than to be very disappointed!!

I repeat... do not put your nitro guitar on an orange tubed guitar stand... unless you have custom made slip covers by Karen. :D

Hey.. not a bad name for a business eh? "Custom Covers by Karen".

Hey Doug, I think you might be onto something there!

Or, how about Kustom Kovers by Karen?? No, it's too cutesy (kutesy?). Yeah, because fleece covers for guitar stands isn't cute enough LOL Nevertheless, they do a fine job.

AClayton - wrap yourself in blue cellophane and apply a light coating of Virtuoso polish to the wrapping. That will solve the problem of the shirt dye running on the guitar, and you might get signed at a casino in Las Vegas:)

Sorry, one too many glasses of Lambrusco this evening, couldn't resist ...har har

I thought about that for a microsecond Karen. I even typed Kustom... but backspaced as soon as I realized the TLA (Three Letter Acronym) would be KKK. :- ;)

Yeah I would watch out for shonky stands. I use Hercules neck-hanger stands for live work at present, and haven't had any trouble to date. Before that I had a very natty little F*nder stand that I used for years, shock folded down to the size of around a beer can, but folded out to a sturdy stand that I trusted my SJ200 to for years, until I lost it!

I love those little Fender folding stands. I gave mine away and haven't found one to replace it yet.

It's just like the good ole days..... Murphy Slaw and Hall Groper chit-chatting! :-

FWIW' date=' I actually sewed (don't laugh) little fleece covers for my orange tube guitar stands.[/quote']

I use old black socks.......... clean ones of course. :-

I have been thinking about getting the wall hangers too..

cheaper than buying warwick multi stand...

will this stand react to Nitro......????

No... they are great. I've got most of my guitars on these type of wall hangers. (The ones in the photo are Apex but I have Herc's on the other wall) The rest sit on Herc stands.

i know this topic has kept rearing its head in one form or another over the past few months...

the reason i decided to chime in is because now im not sure if my initial offering to the subject was entirely helpful...

initially i told people on this forum, the fender forum, and about 2 others that i belong to that i used athletic tape and just wrapped up the foam on my stands so that they had contact with that fabric tape over the poly foam...

acoustics in general i dont keep out on the stand too long (a week or so at a time at most)

not because i am anal, its just sometimes i want it in my room, other times i'm back on my electrics and so i stick my planet waves humidifier in between the strings and case it back up until i am ready for it again!

here is what i noticed on my electrics that i keep out on stands pretty much all the time...

1. I am pretty lucky in that my condo stays relatively constant in terms of temp (I get free heat so i make sure my place is always a toasty 72 or so degrees)

2. For the most part my guitars dont get de-tuned too badly (I am referring to the ones on the stand...if i didnt make that abundantly obvious before hand)

3. ***HERE IS THE UPDATE***

I did notice that the glue or adhesive that makes athletic tape sticky...(i chose athletic tape because if it was safe enough for my skin, its safe enough for my guitar...that was the thought)

Now I might be changing my tune.

What i realized is that the adhesive can "bleed" thru the tape at the edges and eventually end up on your guitar

My Strat is white so this is a fairly easy diagnosis and fix, but my Les Paul (VM) doesnt seem to be too affected by this phenomenon...but either way a damp cloth will make it right as rain.

*whether or not there are any adverse long-term affect remains to be seen but so far none (My Strat is Nitro...not Poly...check the sig)

i felt partially responsible because i did recommend this technique to quite a few people and at least they now have all the info i do...
